View Full Version : Che T-Shirts

Right, just had to do this thread to try and explain the whole thing i found alot of people have here with people wearing Che T's.
Just because a person is wearing a T-shirt with his face on doesnt mean they know anything about him, hell they probally dont even know his name let alone what he has done. I find that when people see someone half famous with a Che T-shirt on, they jump to the conclusion he/she is a outright supporter of Che and what he had done thoughout his life.
The simple fact it, Che's face is now just a part of a fasion trend unfortunatly.
maybe i could be wrong, what you people think

No it doesn't mean that they know anything about him but it doesn't mean that they are completely ignorant on Che and Communism either. If I see someone with a Che shirt that I'm talking to I'll ask them if they know who Che is and if they are ignorant and don't know anything about him then I will know that they're only wearing it for the fashion. Also i'd ask them where they got it, did they make it themsleves, did they buy it from a street vendoI woulr place etc. or did they get it at HOT TOPIC or something like that. When che's face is used by capitalists to make trendy shirt is what I think is retarted
its mostly just fashion

When I first bought my first che T-shirt at HotTopic I did'nt know anything about him. (the clerk thought it was a funny shirt) but know I understand who he is and what he is and everything else, maybe the shirts are good so that kids can learn more about him.

This is the case oftentimes. Here, a lot of people wear Che shirts like it's a fashion statement. And most of them, I am sure don't know who Che really is.

OK I don't like non-leftists wearing the shirt, but lets think about it - people who wear che t-shirts might just find out who he was. Then they might start to find out that they agree with him - its a good way for people to join us. I found this site because I was looking for 'cool stuff on che,' so the myth worked for me. Sure, I had my views in place before I came here, but the principle is there.

Meh, I got here because someone said I looked like the bastard
I don't really see the point in fashion at all. If I saw a che shirt for sale in Oxfam, sure - until that day I won't be wearing one, and I'll scoff at those who do just as I do at the gucci crew.

I acturally own a Che t-shirt and bracelet I got from Ecurador. A lot of kids in Toronto wear his t-shirt since Jay-z started wearing it and I also have a friend on Msn who love Che because he spanish but doesn't know anying about his politics.

I have a Che shirt. But I haven't worn it in a long time.
The one time I got the guts to ask someone who was wearing such a shirt who the guy was, guess what they said?
"It's Bob Marley." :o   <_<

i don´t like any fashion. that destroys the own charakter of someone. if evryone would wear exactly the things he´d like best, without knowing anything about fashion, you would know much more of his charakter. since che t-shirts are fashion, i don´t wear mine very often anymore - i don´t like beeing a part of the fashion and i don´t like people thinking i don´t know che (like many others wearing such shirts), so i prefer my bag with the che patch

I must admit, I am in fundamentally the same position. I feel Che is being misrepresented by this fashion, and thus, if I where my Che shirt, I will be seen as this 'fashion'.
How unfortunate.
What you really need is a Che shirt that says more though. The picture alone won't do. Some fashion shirts have stuff like "Who the hell is this guy?" <_<
I think something like "Revolutrionary" (though I suppose this can be turned into fashion too), or even better, "Hasta la victoria siempre" or ... something revolutionary like. Be creative.

I seem to remember a survey done in the US where c. 30% thought it was George Harrison. No respect. Freakin' gringos.
I own a che t-shirt which was foisted upon me in bolivia (I've never had fashion sense anyway, so eh!), and another that my aunt gave to me two days ago.
I used to be fairly opposed to the commodification of Che's image. Now, however, I have a different oultook: if a person is wearing such a shirt, it is the perfect excuse to start talking to the about socialism. And selling shirts with his image is a curious experience- most people who buy the shirt are not entirely up on who Che was, but, once again, the image as icon presents a chance to talk to people.
Che was opposed to being treated as a star, however it has taken place despite him. The only qualification I would add to the wearing or sale of Che *material* is that it ought to be directly connected to a revolutionary organisation or movement. Using it for purely capitalistic purposes is the worst kind of betrayal of the revolutionary process.

alternative fashion is still fashion, just because kate moss isn't wearing it doesn't mean it's not "fashion"
I wear my Che shirts all the time, people can do whatever and wear whatever I don't care.

woah. i was really really very shocked when i saw some addvertisment (don´t know for what - not important) i´ll explain to you what was to see there: a man (he looked nearly exactly like che) sitting on a confortable couch (smoking a cigar of course) reading a newspaper where you could read the headline "evry revolution ends on the couch" (free translated from german) and the topic of the add was: "luxuriance is a human right". che never would have agreed with this add

Man, I love it when people who don't know Che wear Che shirts around me. It just gives me an excuse to go into a massive rant about their fucking ignorance. And on the rare occasion I meet someone who actually KNOWS who che is, it's fun.

i've literally grew up listening to stories of Che from my family members...when i met my grandmother for the first time the first thing she said to me was "you look alot like Che" so i've always known Che...its just recently i've gotten to understand Che...thats where i believe the key is...
i know this white dude that doesnt even say Che right...pronouncing it "Chee"...and i have multiple Che shirts...when i went to go buy myself a green one in staten island,NYC i had a conversation with the store clerk that admitted he didnt know who he was and the only reason why he sells it is cause "its a hot shirt"...that literally offends me to know that a revolutionary symbol is wore by morons...its like criminals running with police badges
i dont believe we can run from the fact that people dont know who Che is...i try to keep his name in people that want to learn...its not about wanting to know its about wanting to learn...

well, i havent got a che shirt (only because i cant afford one) but i plan to get one, and im going to wear it and be really proud!!!! i dont care what other people think, all my friends know how much i adore che, and they're the only people who's opinion counts to me! if someone who does know che and thinks im just one of those people who wears him for fashion, that's their problem for not having the guts to come up and ask me if i did! when i see someone with anything che on, i usually call out as im going past "i hope you know who you're wearing!!!!" maybe it will make them curious if they dont know??? thats my aim anyway!

i know this white dude that doesnt even say Che right...pronouncing it "Chee"
I pronounce it both ways depending on who I'm talking to. It's a matter of where you read it and how you read it. If I'm not mistaken it's actually supposed to be Ché -- Which is why it doesn't sound like "Chee." However, as normal English (at least US English) phonics would dictate, Che would more likely than not be pronounced "Chee." In fact, I'm not quit so sure why people don't type Ché more often, maybe it's cause people just don't know how to get the accent over the E. Awell.

I have 2 Che Guevara shirts... One I got from a Mexican guy at a flea market in Sacramento, where I live, and another I got from a street vendor in New York, where I go to school. The guy at the flea market knew who he was and a decent amount about him, and was also selling a lot of cool shirts of Zapata and Pancho Villa and all them... I didn't talk to the street vendor about him however... I'd rather spend an extra $5/$6 bucks on a shirt to buy it from a vendor than to buy it for less from a large conglomerate.... At least you're supporting a smaller business to advertise the cause.....
One of the ones I have has a Cuban flag behind him and has Che embroidered at the top with HOMBRE REBELDE across the bottom of the pic... it also has HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE across the back with a less cliche'd pic of him....... It's an awesome shirt

I got mine completely by chance, i thought it looked cool, then, I got wondering, who IS this guy! so i found out, and now, he's my hero, and here I am, a leftist.
I think it's sick how people are wearing the stuff with his face on it, if he doesnt mean anything to them, I'm gunna have a nice long talk with some idiots at school.
and, Che was once asked for his autograph, he angrily shooed the fan away and said "What do I look Like, A movie star?!"

I just see.. well to me Ches face aint so important, but since I know who he was, it gives hope and strenght to see the face of a true fighter and hey, there is also few other faces that can do this trick, but Che is one of many. I dont really know, I have one shirt, but its a souvenir from "Lenin museum" here in finland. Thats it.

The simple fact it, Che's face is now just a part of a fasion trend unfortunatly.
Hell yeah his face is a trend. I see hip hop guys wearing che shirts all the time, and I'll go "nice shirt" and they'll think I'm hitting on them, it's sad.
There was this trendy hip hop senior in my chemistry class last year who actually made an effort to find out who che was before he excitedly told me he was gonna buy one.
Che merchandise has more benefits than anything. If a young person gets a che shirt, most of the time they'll at least try to find out who he was before they wear it so they don't look like a fool when people ask if they even know who he was. Then they'll think "if this hot guy was a communist then it can't be that bad". They won't have that stigma in their minds about it anymore.

Well you could say that communism has always been "What is that all about thing?" in my life, also I hated soviet flag quite long (im from finland and as you know we fought on the side of german in ww2), but then I approached the subject from somewhere else, there was this figure on t-shirt, flags and so on. So I decided to take a closer look and here I am, also now I "love" the soviet flag.. I finally got this report from university that "It is possible that if we would have given some land to russia which they wanted we could have saved many lives." This is just a theory but based on facts. No one knows what kind of plans Stalin had, but thats for that. Its those Che t-shirts, flags and so on, that led me towards socialism.. And I think that many others have also taken a closer look behind the t-shirt. :)

Seems most people who wear them don't know who he is, I asked one guy and he told me that Che killed Communists.
On a side note, I found a Che poster in the bushes by Tower records last night. It was unrapped, in a bag, with a receipt for 120 dollars worth of cds.

I will admit, Che's spinning in his grave right nnow. But there are those who do only wear the shirts because they look cool, but what about the others who wear it to make a statement? Like me, I admire Che and what he did, I may not know that much about everything he did, but what i know about i like, and I'm expanding my knowledge, so those of you who think that "only posers wear em." have respect for what you don't know, because you dont know everything about a person, just by what shirt he or she wears, ;)

Was helping teach economics to a group of high school students, we talked about humanist/marxist versus capitalist perspectives and had the
students think about the subjects and do reflective writing.
The student wearing the Che shirt was the most capitalist, most competitive and the most into private property.
I was not allowed to question him on his choice of heroes but was saddened by this, as we were keeping our views silent.
Luckily another student in a plain shirt took up the banner though under his own understanding and defended his views against the rest of the class

Sums me up well. People have said I don't "look" Communist, most days you'll see me in a pair of second hand jeans with a plain shirt. Perhaps I should get a Hammer and sickle pin in order to better look the part. And though it's often dificult defending your views to a whole class of people, there's some joy in it, and every person you manage to convince, much less persuade to investigate communism, is a victory.
People in Che tshirts, 99% of the time, don't know who he is, are capitalist, and are right wing, so I rarely attempt any leftist discussion with them.

The the dad said jokingly arrh so he is a terriost soon you will be in a terriost group and we laughed. Then his mum said nah he is a freedom fighter fought for the people of cuba he was anti fidel and fought for the americans.

I actually found this site a year and a half ago because I had just seen Jay Z wearing a Che shirt and I was royally pissed off...lol My brother owns 2 shirts, and I own 1 shirt...we bought them at this small independent vendor in Berkeley. I know a lot of ppl wear him cuz its "cool" but I don't think it's such of a bad thing because it'll make ppl more curious and it gives him more exposure. People will actually want to find out who he was, and why he is so popular. Since I live in a really progressive/leftist area in the U$A, its no big deal, but I have been complimented a couple times by strangers. Once by a cuban old guy and another by a really massive hungarian-type guy with a huge accent..."nice churt." My brother doesn't even bother to explain who he is anymore if they seem totally unreceptive...he told an Ambercrombie and Fitch guy that he was a mexican actor just to not even waste his breath...lol
