Ok this thread is kind of in response to some things i read on the dead prez website where some people were blaming all white people for the crimes of some white people, so i would just like to recap a small sample of how oppression works. Firstly white people were obviously the worst in the oppression of black peoples (indeed all peoples) but one has to remember that alot of the white people involved were enticed by richer white people, and then black people were encouraged to fight against native americans (i once heard that some NA tribes had no different word for white and black people because to them both were equally responsible for the oppression). Also, in the begining alot of African kings sold the Africans as slaves to white people, alot of white people were enslaved by white people since the dawn of time. Alot of black people termed 'house negroes' sold out the 'field negroes' for a better position. In tern alot of poor white people sold out and oppressed the black people to hold onto their moderately better position (most of the modern KKK and racists are poor and ignorant). Immigrants were used alot in labour forces and encouraged to see other immigrants as a threat to their jobs (Irish vs. German vs. Italians etc.) and with the end of slavery to direct their anger towards blacks who were entering the labour force.
Now it is in the best interests of the dominant elite to have unemployment because it keeps wages low. If you have a group of labour to draw on that has nothing you can always threaten those willing to work for little with having nothing.
In this way the dominant elite keeps the lower stratasphere of the population fractioned so that they are never identified as the enemy. This is not done in a cynical manner though (i believe). It is deeply internalised in a subconcious systematical structure. For example I quite sure that few secret meetings between president Bush and anyone occur, he just doesn't seem that smart, and has grown up hearing more lies than anyone. In fact I've met alot of lower elites and if you avoid politics they are really nice, many are not even racist and believe their companies and investments and offering the chance for many minority and poor people to improve their lives. Why shouldn't they? this is what they've been told, this is what they tell themselves, their children. Now for the last year I've been traveling in Canada, Cuba, England, France, Germany, and Spain and I've loved just about everyone I've met. I put aside all my prejudices about everything and tried to see people the way they see themselves and found that everyone was friendly and operated by a system of morals that they often assumed the whole world operated by (and that many just hadnt realized it yet) around the same principles unless they were evil or amoral. Now all these people who go across all class boundaries I believe are innocent of their prejudices and it is the malignant ideas that live in everyone of Pride, Identity, Greed, Fear, Prejudice and Hate (to varying degrees). The second we (all) educate oursleves and stop separating ourselves from our rich and poor, black and white, old and young, brothers and sisters these ideas will be destroyed beyond the capacity of memory to recall their existence. And Communities will no longer be governed by external evolution, being destroyed if they arent strong enough and needing weapons and an edge to compete, but be governed by their own will.
