Now all this thread is missing is some nut to come along and tell us we're all 'musical puritans' or some shit...
Biggest asshole, if I had to name one, would be the guy who was manager of the Spice Girls, and also introduced such travesties into the world as Atomic Kitten.
To this day, I still cannot understand why either of those bands sold...
*EDIT*
Scratch that, everyone who chooses a life in music. You know what you're getting into, and if you choose to take a career in music you know you're selling your soul.

Jay-Z, who eternally compares himself to Che and many rap artists who has nothing to talk about but sex and money

Could everyone please stop attacking Metallica? Napster was being illegal anyway...Someone was bound to stop them. And Metallica are nice guys even if tehy do want more than their fair share of money. Don't forget they do give money to charities and stuff. But yea, stopping napster wasn't nice of them. Also, you can't just say anyone signed to a major label's an asshole. Nirvana weren't and they signed to Geffen (admittedly just before releasing their worst album (Nevermind), but yea). In general though a lot of major labels are assholes. Rock on 4AD, Sub Pop, K, Elektra and any other companies which sign competent bands.
Sid Vicious wasn't really an asshole....just messed up and killed someone....That's beyond asshole-dom

suuuuure, sid killed nancy.... you actually think someone with such a high level of heroin and whatever else he was taking could kill someone? the most likely theory is that it was the drug dealer.
Urban Rubble
26th August 2004, 23:54
It's well known that Sid and Nancy had a death pact. What was supposed to happen is that Sid was going to kill her and then OD on heroin. Well, he pussed out and then did himself in days later. I've actually never really heard people question whether it was him or not, it's pretty clear that is was in fact him that did it.

27th August 2004, 00:43

I actually like rap alot, some of it can actually be really deep, like Biggie Smalls, Tupac, Nas, Ricochet Klashnekoff, Big Pun . They talk about the struggle and have almost always is most of their songs talked about the struggle of living in the ghetto and put women in a good light ( I perticulary like Tupacs " the rose that grew from the concrete")
But someone i really hate is 50 Cent, he tried to act like he was all prison hardened when he was only in there for 6 weeks, And he is suposiblly a snitch that run and called the cops when it got a little to hot.
and eamon, first off, He aint black!!!! and he's just a complete peice of comercial shit, and if you have seen that song " love them hoes " you will be wondering why this stupid twat thinks he's "ghetto"

Me too but shut up. The people who think sid didn't kill nancy (or at least he aided her in suicide) are as bad as those who think Kurt Cobain was murdered or Hendrix killed himself.
Metallica may have been looking out or the maany bands that would be puton the street by napster. Like the little indie guys. And they are nice people. They aren't total dick heads like axl rose.
And when it comes to rap I think some aren't that bad. Public Enemy? Tupac (never heard him but I heard he wasn't so bad)? Eminem isn't awful? Etc. But 99.999999% of all modern rap is crap. Same with "R'n'B". Real R'n'B is Leadbelly, BB King, etc. NOT Beyonce.
DaCuBaN
27th August 2004, 08:55
Man, read the thread. Half way through I threw out the assertion that anyone who by choice goes into the Music Industry is an asshole: It was tongue in cheek, but it's still mostly accurate: The little indie guys all work their arses off like the rest of us and do music as a hobby in many cases because they never do get enough money to survive off their music alone.
At any rate, CD sales provide for an opulent lifestyle, something I myself cannot justify: Gigging provides enough to make a living if your name is known.
The Forum Idiot
27th August 2004, 11:04
But what if your name is not known. Four Star Mary would die without CD sales. As would the Datsuns and much much more. The Vaselines only have 2 cds available and they both have the same stuff (different order, notes, etc) and gave up many years ago. They now live off the occasional CD sale and the royalties from Nirvana's Unplugged. They aren't exactly living like kings though.

Why would you talk that mess?
Tupac is faaaar from being the best rapper...I can think of twenty right off the top of my head that Tupac couldn't best in terms of flow, lyrics, political and social consciousness.
He is a man of great influence -- and if you are comparing him to other mainstream rappers, also a man of great talent. However, the second you compare him to artists from the underground, he is far overshadowed in every possible way.

Well, Sex Pistols, one of the 'epitome' of punk rock bands was formed by the record label EMI. Similar to the way the Spice Girls were put together. Owned and controlled by the label from the start they never had a chance to sellout because they already did.

I never said they had their songs written for them. I said they were put together by a record label, which they were.
They sold out from their scene by being made by a record label.
How am I being ultra-hardcore? I like the Sex Pistols, I just find the history behind them humourous because so many kids think they are punk rock's finest creation.
No band will ever live to be a perfect punk band, it's a suicide mission. You start a punk band because you don't like the current music scene, you gather a small fanbase and they become your hardcore fans. After awhile more and more people get to know you, your original fanbase calls you sellouts and you've been chunked into the mainstream that you never wanted to be part of.
