Does a dictatorship of the proletariat mean that there HAS to be a dictator to guide us through to communism, or can a government that simply works for the interests of the proletariat be another way? Do we have to hand power over to one person? Because we've seen what that has led to.

Funnily enough, the dictatorship of the proletariat is administered by the proletariat. They may be members of the party that has lead the revolution or they may not be. There is no need for "one man" to guide anyone, anywhere, individuals are unimportant. It is the makers of the revolutions that create history for themselves.

In theory, dictatorship of the proletariat means the state is controlled by the entire working class. In practice it means the dictatorship of the communist party. This isn't necessarily the dictatorship of one man, though it sometimes is, but it is effectively the dictatorship of the leaders of the communist party.
