SPECIAL COURSE OFFERING FROM THE LABOUR EDUCATION CENTRE:

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS;
GLOBALIZATION AND WORLD INEQAULITY


This course will look at the unequal relationships between so-called “1st and 3rd world’ countries, historically and today, as well as the causes and outcomes of global inequality, and the possibilities of building solidarity between working people of different countries.


THEMES INCLUDE:

 The origins of global inequality: From Columbus to the World Bank
 How and why the ‘1st and 3rd worlds’ were created and are maintained
 The ‘Cold War’, US military interventions, and ‘friendly’ dictators
 Imperialism: How and why the wealthy of Western nations build empires
 How the IMF, World Bank and foreign aid keeps ‘developing’ nations poor
 Modern Globalisation: Mickey Mouse, Big Macs, and Nike; The rise of Sweatshops, child labour and extreme poverty
 Rebels and Guerrillas: The movements for revolutionary change in the ‘3rd world’ and why they are demonised in the West
