There is some music that is so dark it can change the mood of even the jolliest of occasion. Entire genre's of music are dedicated to reproducing this kind of music, yet a lot of the best most monumental dark music comes from bands which you do not associate with that kind of atmosphere. Below is a list of songs that I think almost epitomise dark music: -
Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones
Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
Archives of Pain - The Manic Street Preachers (pretty much most of the album, this song is included on, is very very dark.)
Zombie - The Cranberries
Every Breath You Take - The Police (If you actually listen to the lyrics, you may discover that its not all you thought it to be  )
Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2
Sliver – Nirvana
There are of course a hell of a lot of songs which should be in this list, any suggestions?

Err yeah it is, do you even know what Sliver is about? Clearly not.
Suicide is painless - manic street preachers
The manics didn't write that song, they only covered it, it was the theme of MASH.

I realize it was the MASH theme, but the on the show, only the music. Who did do it first, Johnny...something? Mathis? Oh well. The song sounds so light hearted, but the lyrics are obviously very deep.

"Suicidal Thoughts" - Notorious B.I.G.
"When I die, fuck it I wanna go to hell
Cause I'm a piece of shit, it ain't hard to fuckin' tell
It don't make sense, goin' to heaven wit the goodie-goodies
Dressed in white, I like black Tims and black hoodies
God will probably have me on some real strict shit
No sleepin' all day, no gettin my dick licked
Hangin' with the goodie-goodies loungin' in paradise
Fuck that shit, I wanna tote guns and shoot dice
All my life I been considered as the worst
Lyin' to my mother, even stealin' out her purse
Crime after crime, from drugs to extortion
I know my mother wished she got a fuckin' abortion
She don't even love me like she did when I was younger
Suckin' on her chest just to stop my fuckin' hunger
I wonder if I died, would tears come to her eyes?
Forgive me for my disrespect, forgive me for my lies..."

O, so disturbing. You're thinking of Polly, Stain, blew and virtually everything from bleach except about a girl

The darkest music is almost alway (to me anyway) instrumental classical - without words, the imagination prevails. I remember hearing the theme to Schindlers List (long before I saw the film - the music made me watch it) and being unable to suppress my emotion. To this day, I cannot listen to it in it's totality.

Recorded, I quite agree. Live is a totally different kettle of fish
I still wouldn't call them dark though.
