Actually I think it was at a wake, Fidel was speaking/giving eulogy and Che was watching on mournfully, it was outside, I don't know if he was standing on a stage or anything but either way his good friend and comrade Alberto Korda positioned himself beneath him and took the picture with the perfect blue sky as a white backdrop.

Yeah that is a bad ass picture of Che. It's cool that a pic like that can spark a curiosity in so many people to ask who was that guy and what did he do.

It was taken at a public ceremony mourning the death of some people in an accident, which I think involved explosives.

He was attending the March 5, 1960 funeral of the 80 Cubans killed when CIA agents blew up a French ship, the La Coubre, carrying munitions at anchor in Havana harbour.

I always thought he looked rather angry. Contrast it with his image of him with Fidel:
