(CNN) -- Dropping a political bombshell, New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey announced his resignation Thursday after revealing that he is gay and that he had an adulterous affair with a man.
With his wife standing by his side, McGreevey -- a father of two -- spoke in calm tones as he described his struggle with his sexuality, "a certain sense that separated me from others." It was something that he said began as a child.
"At a point in every person's life, one has to look deeply into the mirror of one's soul and decide one's unique truth in the world, not as we may want to see it or hope to see it, but as it is," McGreevey said.
"And so, my truth is that I am a gay American," the Democrat said.

Goes to show how restrictive and repressive marriage is and how labeling people as "straight" or "gay" is pointless and prohibitive.

I don't think it shows that at all...what it does show, however, is that this guy likes other guys and couldn't sustain a political career when people found out.
Interesting question...if this happened in, let's say, France would it have been something to resign over?

In Norway, the Finance minister or whatever you call it is openly gay. Per Kristian Foss is his name

He should have divorced his wife, married the guy and not have resigned.

I do not think it is possible in the US at this time for an openly homsexual person to be electeted. If he stayed in office he wouldent have had a chance of re-election, I would have liked to see how thing unfolded though, if he did'ent resign. :(

From what I gleaned from it at his press conference is that he publicly "came out" (which is really nobody business but him and his wife) because the guy he was having the affair with had decided to blackmail him. Why he is resigning probably runs a lot deeper than having an affair, because having an affair does not make one resign -- ala Clinton....he probably made the payoff with gov. funds and the guy kept demanding money, so he had no choice but to make it public so he doesn't bankrupt NJ with extortion. Always something sordid going on in the Gov.

The official story so far is McGreevey hired his boyfriend as security advisor, the boyfriend couldn't pass the security clearance because he's not a citizen but an Israeli Nationalist, so he was fired from that position, but McGreedy kept him on the payroll for a few hundred thousand dollars a year anyway. Then the romance went sour and the boyfriend was threatening to expose his sexuality unless he paid him a couple million.
cronyism, sex, payoffs, coverups. -- all the usual Government deserts.

As I understand it, this guy's term of office has coincided with a flurry of investigations and indictments -- business as usual in New Jersey.
Perhaps he resigned now because it's better to resign for being gay than it is to resign because you're under indictment and have to go to trial for public corruption.

I'd much rather resign for doing something wrong than being forced to quit over the out-dated prejuduces of some 'moralistic' Christian bigotts.

Has anyone else heard some rumors about his connections with the mafia?

I think the point was that McGreevey will now go down in history as having been a 'victim of persecution' and 'ahead of his time' instead of being 'that asshole from New Jersey who went down for corruption, nepotism, and being way too friendly with the business sector.'
Pretty good planning, if you think about it.
