Personally, I think imprisoning dissidents is a silly thing to do, but releasing this guy just before Jimmy Carter's visit is sending a message of weakness from Castro, who has been seen as a strongman for most of his presidency.

his prison sentence was a couple weeks away from being completed. It was kissing anyones 'behind'. Very few prisoners, anywhere, surve their full sentence. If they have good behaviour they area always let out early.

Castro hasn't recieved praise form a single US president, little will change that

But Carter wants the sanctions lifted, surely he'll get a "He's not so bad... I guess" from him during the visit? ;)
