Fallen Comrade of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement

James McPhilemy
Volunteer - Irish National Liberation Army
Killed in Action on 10 August 1988

Aged 20, McPhilemy was part of a three-man INLA unit when he was
killed in action as they prepared to attack a British Army checkpoint
at Clady, Co. Tyrone.

He made himself vulnerable when he called out to warn children in the
area to get down. The British soldiers opened fire and killed him.

A memorial to McPhilemy and another comrade was unveiled in Strabane
on 10 August 2003.

He died as he lived: a Republican Socialist. Remember him with honour
and pride.

seems there is quite a colourful history of socialism and republicanism in Ireland, do you have a family hisotry of it? is ure dad a socialist?

I have a comrade here (in new zealand) who is from ireland - he is a great man, quite old now. i think he was in the IRA at some stage - i havnt really asked him much about ireland.

When I make it to ireland one day ill check out the monuments and track down some comrades.

no, I have no family history of it. My dad is Irish but he is no socialist sorry to say. He's quite a reactionary, actually.

I'm glad to hear you'll be making a trip there! If you want to know more about Ireland or good sites to visit, I'd talk to Coighnaileach, I'm sure he wouldn't mind answering a few queries!

I love Australia but don't know as much about NZ; I play Aussie rules footy, actually. I've heard that NZers prefer rugby (my amazing power to always turn a conversation to sports! ).

whats the irish goverment like? is it left wing at all?

the irish gov't pretty much sides with the brits; they've even murdered republican activists! they just passed a very racist referendum to cut down on how many immigrants from africa, etc can claim assylum - even their children born in the "republic" of Ireland.

it's not nearly as right-wing as the US gov't or the Brits but they sort of tow the same line if you see what I mean.
