I don't know if this has been discussed before, but anyways I was sitting and listening to some Bob Marley and noticed some of his lyrics were pretty cool altough he mentions god and jesus and that shit, but anyways still cool.

Taken from "Get up stand up"

Get up, stand up: don't give up the fight!
Preacherman, don't tell me,
Heaven is under the earth.
I know you don't know
What life is really worth.
It's not all that glitters is gold;
'Alf the story has never been told:
So now you see the light, eh!
Stand up for your rights. Come on!
Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
[...]
Get up, stand up: don't give up the fight!
Most people think,
Great God will come from the skies,
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high.
But if you know what life is worth,
You will look for yours on earth:
And now you see the light,
You stand up for your rights. Jah!
Get up, stand up! (Jah, Jah!)
Stand up for your rights! (Oh-hoo!)
Get up, stand up! (Get up, stand up!)
Don't give up the fight! (Life is your right!)
Get up, stand up! (So we can't give up the fight!)
Stand up for your rights! (Lord, Lord!)
Get up, stand up! (Keep on struggling on!)
Don't give up the fight! (Yeah!)
We sick an' tired of-a your ism-skism game -
Dyin' 'n' goin' to heaven in-a Jesus' name, Lord.
We know when we understand:
Almighty God is a living man.
You can fool some people sometimes,
But you can't fool all the people all the time.
So now we see the light (What you gonna do?),
We gonna stand up for our rights! (Yeah, yeah, yeah!)
So you better:
[...]
Don't give up the fight! /fadeout/

Some from "Rat Race"

Uh! Ya too rude!
[..]
Oh, what a rat race!
This is the rat race! Rat race! (Rat race!)
Some a lawful, some a bastard, some a jacket:
Oh, what a rat race, yeah! Rat race!
Some a gorgon-a, some a hooligan-a, some a guine-gog-a
In this 'ere rat race, yeah!
Rat race!
I'm singin' that
When the cat's away,
The mice will play.
Political voilence fill ya city, ye-ah!
Don't involve Rasta in your say say;
Rasta don't work for no C.I.A.
Rat race, rat race, rat race! Rat race, I'm sayin':
When you think is peace and safety:
A sudden destruction.
Collective security for surety, ye-ah!
Don't forget your history;
Know your destiny:
In the abundance of water,
The fool is thirsty.
Rat race, rat race, rat race!
Rat race!
Oh, it's a disgrace
To see the human-race
In a rat race, rat race!
You got the horse race;
You got the dog race;
You got the human-race;
But this is a rat race, rat race!

This is from "Slave Driver"

Ooh-ooh-oo-ooh. Oo-oo-ooh! Oo-oo-ooh.
Slave driver, the table is turn; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire, so you can get burn, now. (catch a fire)
Slave driver, the table is turn; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire: gonna get burn. (catch a fire) Wo, now!
Ev'rytime I hear the crack of a whip,
My blood runs cold.
I remember on the slave ship,
How they brutalize the very souls.
Today they say that we are free,
Only to be chained in poverty.
Good God, I think it's illiteracy;
It's only a machine that makes money.
Slave driver, the table is turn, y'all. Ooh-ooh-oo-ooh.
Slave driver, uh! The table is turn, baby, now; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire, so you can get burn, baby, now. (catch a fire)
Slave driver, the table is turn, y'all; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire: so you can get burn, now. (catch a fire)
Ev'rytime I hear the crack of a whip,
My blood runs cold.
I remember on the slave ship,
How they brutalize the very soul.
O God, have mercy on our souls!
Oh, slave driver, the table is turn, y'all; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire, so you can get burn. (catch a fire)
Slave driver, the table is turn, y'all; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire ... /fadeout/

From "War/No more trouble"

Until the philosophy which hold one race superior
And another
Inferior
Is finally
And permanently
Discredited
And abandoned -
Everywhere is war -
Me say war.
That until there no longer
First class and second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man's skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes -
Me say war.
That until the basic human rights
Are equally guaranteed to all,
Without regard to race -
Dis a war.
That until that day
The dream of lasting peace,
World citizenship
Rule of international morality
Will remain in but a fleeting illusion to be pursued,
But never attained -
Now everywhere is war - war.
And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes
that hold our brothers in Angola,
In Mozambique,
South Africa
Sub-human bondage
Have been toppled,
Utterly destroyed -
Well, everywhere is war -
Me say war.
War in the east,
War in the west,
War up north,
War down south -
War - war -
Rumours of war.
And until that day,
The African continent
Will not know peace,
We Africans will fight - we find it necessary -
And we know we shall win
As we are confident
In the victory

That one shows that he is very much opposed to facism and (neo)nazism. I will not post any more lyrics, but listen to some Bob yourself. A good album is Rebel Music :)

Bob showed the world the Caribbean are not to be swept under the rug. He showed the world that there was hope in trenchtown, and for those living under the rock.

I think it's best put as follows :

"Never again will we see the likes of him."

I dont think I'd call Marley a leftist. His denunciations of religion and church aren't what they seem. He believes the Emperor Haille Selassie of Ethiopia is the living God, King of Kings, and that the media and the church, institutions of Babylon suppress this fact. I love Bob Marley but i wouldnt say he was a leftist, thats all. And the lyrics posted from War/No more trouble are from a Selassie speach at the UN. My favorite Marley lyric is "I feel like bombing a church, now that I know that the preacher is lying."

Bob Marley never denounced religion, he denounced churches that promoted the more Eurocentric views. Examples of this would be Roman catholicism.

Bob was very religious, and it's evident in his lyrics.

Btw, nice lyrics from Talkin' Blues. heh.

In fact, most of the words for that song are from a part of a long speech that Haile Selassie gave to the UN on October 4th, 1963. Bob beautifully put it to music. Rebel Music is a great album

Wasn't Bob Marley a Zionist? I dig his music but i think a lot of it was confused with his overt religiousness. He'd make a song like burning and looting which was amazing, but then end up chanting Holy Man Zion in Get Up Stand Up which didn't really sit right with me. Still good shit anyway though.

Not really sure if I'd consider Bob a "leftist", but I think his sympathies for the working class and poor are obvious. His music, is of course, amazing.

The guy gave freedom to his people through his music, and that's certainly a powerful and beautiful thing.

And as a pretty anti-religious guy myself, I still find his devotion to Rastafarianism, and Rastafarianism itself, extremely interesting.

he was not a Zionist .. is it because he talks about Zion? if that’s the case then i think u should look up the meaning of Zion , Zionist and Rastafarian
