View Full Version : French and Spanish Thoughts on Basque Separatism

Useless fact of the day: Basque is the only language spoken in Europe today that is not in the Indo-European group.
I've been interested by Basque separatists for a long time, but it's been rather hard for me to grasp the way that Spanish and French people feel towards them. From what I can tell, the French have more sympathy for them than the Spanish do, but this may be due to the fact that the only breaking news I get on Basque separatism is always terrorism-related. Also, I can't quite tell if all Basque people are strongly separatist, or if it's only a few ETA sympathizers. A few sources are available on the Internet, but none are too great. If anyone has any information that they'd like to share, that would be hunky dory.

I think what they do awefull. The constantly murder people for as long as I can remember, from everthing leftist to everything spanish-goverment-judicial-system related. I think they have done a number of referendums in Basque contry and the majority always said no to independance. I dont know if they have an autonomy status though but I think so. ETA "fights" for the independace of the Basque territory which encompasses a part of France too, and thats one of the reasons why they have a hard time catching the guys, coz there are 2 nations involved and they are also very well organised. I think the French goverment doesnt do all it could do to help the spanish police. It seems there is a kind of tacide agreement, ETA is dangerous, ETA doesnt strike French civilians and the French police doesnt want to make too many waves with ETA for fear that they might start revise their terrorism policies with relation to France. At least thats what I think. Regardless I hope they putt an end to ETA because enough is enough.
Basque is not the only not-indo-european language spoken in Europe! What about Finnish, Estonian and other Finno-Ugric languages?
I do have a good friend from Basque Country and he is definitely not a supporter of ETA. He told me that just 10% of Basques are supporting it. But at the same time they can't do anything against ETA. Some time ago French sympatized ETA but not anymore.
Some weeks ago a politician from Spain came to my school and we could ask him questions. I asked about Basques. He compared Basques with cancer and told that Basque Country doesn't have any resouces at all and that Spanish governement gives them all the money etc. Crap! Basque Country is naturally rich and if they are really 'cancer' then why Spain won't let it's self operated? That's the smartest thing to do while having 'cancer'.

from DNA samples the only 2 races of people that cant
be matched to the rest of europe are that of the basques & the sardinians.
I know that the things ETA do is awfull but if the spainish govt wont give them their freedom by political means then why not bomb the shit outa tha spainish?
Im not really into the basques,Im more in to the catalans & "es-cast" the rest of spain depend on barcelona for wealth & thats one of the reasons the catalans hate the spainish.like the way they speak diff languages like the basques speak euskera the catalans speak catalan so thats another reason.
I think the only reason tha french have more sympathy for them is cuz they have less of the basques to deal with! they have a repitation for being fierce muthafuckas & rightfully so.
