Manu Chao, the popular singer, has sent the Hands Off Venezuela Campaign a long text (in Spanish) in solidarity with the venezuelan people and calling for a massive participation in the referendum and to vote to defend the Bolivarian revolution. (July 26, 2004)

The lyrics can be found here: http://www.marxist.com/Latinam/de_manu_chao.html

I was hoping he would make a song for it...would be very funny if it became the big summer hit in Europe or US..but I dont know if he is that popular in the US

De Manu Chao y la Radio BemBA pa' Venezuela

From Manu Chao and Radio BemBA for Venezuela

Buenos días
Panita Venezuela.
Aquí te escribimos pa' darte noticia
de que puedes contar con nuestro apoyo incondicional
en las pruebas
que te reserva
la vida.
Nuestro total apoyo
en tu lucha
por defender
tu democracia.
Esa lucha
por hacer respetar
la sagrada
voluntad de un pueblo.

Good morning
(something like comrade or friend or something, not a word we use here) Venezuela
Here we write you to give you the new
that you can count with your inconditional(?) support
in the tests
that live "has" for you
Our total support
in your struggle
to defend
your democracy
That struggle
to get the sacred will of a population(?)

Puedes saber que estamos a tu lado
frente a los eternos golpes bajos
del viejo y sucio poderío del dinero.
Golpes bajos
de los que siempre jodieron.
De los que siempre explotaron.
De los que siempre supieron tan bien
vender el país a los de afuera.
De los que nunca se acostumbran
a que las cosas cambien...
cambien a bien
y para [email protected]
aunque sea poco a poco.
Golpes bajos
de una corrupción tenaz
Aguas sucias
Bocas de hiena.

You can know that we are on your side
against the eternal low hits(?????????????)
of the old and dirty money's power.
Low hits(???)
from those who always fucked up
for those who always exploited
from those who always knew that well
how to sell the country to the ones outside it.
From those who never get used to
things that change...
Things that change for the best(?)
and for everyone
even if it's little by little.
Low hits(again im not sure about the expression in english)
from a tenaciouis corruption
Dirty waters
Hyenna's mouths.

Arepas de plomo
demasiado tiempo
fueron vuestra condena.
Pero hoy en día
eso esta acabando,
solo es cuestión de tiempo
y de dedicación;
ASI QUE…
¡VIVA LA DEMOCRACIA !
POR FAVOR…
¡VOTEN TODOS POR ELLA !
MASIVAMENTE…
VOTEN TODOS PARA DEFENDER
LA REVOLUCION BOLIVARIANA
ELEGIDA POR EL PUEBLO
EN 1998

Plumb's(?) "Arepas" (dunno the word)
were your condemn
too long time.
But nowadays
that is ending,
it's just a matter of time
and of dedication;
SO...
LONG LIVE THE DEMOCRACY!
PLEASE...
EVERYONE VOTE FOR IT!
MASSIVELY(??)
EVERYONE VOTE TO DEFEND
THE BOLIVARIAN REVOLUTION
CHOSEN BY THE PEOPLE
IN 1998

The rest is more support for Venezuela and blah blah blah

Arepas de plomo

Arepas are yummy corn griddle cakes (I guess that's how you call 'em in english) eaten in Venezuela and Colombia.
