i think that some of the people on here will have an opinion on this -
earlier today, i was in my house, minding my own business.......happily listenin to some random tracks on my PC (not downloaded of course lololol)........these tracks were by bands named - KISS, Van Halen, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest......
next, i was rudely disturbed by three of my next door neighbours playing some random tuneless 'punk' music next door...........now what i found funny was when i chucked a brick at them, they called me a 'american shagger' and various other anti-cappie insults........simply because i told them what i thought of NOFX's debatable musical ability..............
what the point of my lil story is , is to ask one thing, do you really have to listen to nu-punk music (the proper stuff - pistols, clash etc, is great) to be leftist ? i mean...........surely just listenin to KISS doesnt make you a member of the NF does it ?

Of course not. As a matter of fact, I think I agree with your musical views, though I can tolerate punk and the like.

Oh shit. How un-RAWK of them to get riled?? Who the fuck do you think you are, Ozzy fucking Osbourne?? Consider yourself lucky they didn't come round and kick your ass...it'd be pretty justified really.
And how the fuck does that relate to punk, or even heavy metal?? It's about you being a fucking dick to your neighbours.

As much as I find punk music dull and generaly lacking in musicality, I can't agree with throwing bricks at those who lisen to it. And KISS sucks balls, perhaps I should throw bricks at you for listening to that.
And no, you don't have to listen to punk and hardcore, etc. to be a leftist.

That's probably the stupidest thing I've read today.
And as for the original post, I'll take some good punk over silly cock rock any day.

Fuck having justify listening to punk and hardcore to a fucking meathead (I meant "metalhead", my bad).
I listen to it cos it's awesome and so am I. If you don't listen to hardcore it's your loss not mine.

This is was like a foam brick right?
Seriously, you should have done something less ... dodgy as that, like say, throw a flour-filled purple condom at them.
I don't like punk (not bad music, just not my taste).
I don't like glame metal either (errmm... I actually do think this is bad music... ).
Your musical tastes don't dictate your political beliefs, though I wouldn't reccommend listening to right-wing music.

A real or proverbial brick? I can understand their reaction if the former!
Music is music, good musicians know not to get politics involved.

Umm... not true...
Music is an expressive form, musicians who tyr to keep their own beliefs out make cold music, and are probably not very good at all. That's why we get crap pop.
Good music, just like good literature, speaks to the collective human experience. The collective human experience is a social phenomenon, and thus, political. No matter how subtly, good music always has some message to it. That message could be as innocent "drugs are good", or as in your face as "which side are you on?".

Che y Marijuana already pointed out how stupid it was so I'll leave it at that.

Just one thing to make clear though, the message does not have to be apparent in the lyrics.
The greatest musical movements, be they Hippy, Punk, Rapper, Metalhead, general Rocker, all started as a cry against the status quo and the system we reside in. Just the idea of being part of any of these groups is a political statement in and of itself. I have Metalhead friends, so I go to alot of Metal shows and kick it with them in the moshpit. I can't say I understand a word of what is being said, but the songs themselves are an outcry and an expression of rage. Though I know the bands they listen to make songs about George Bush being an asshole, I don't have to know the lyrics to know that. I can feel it when I'm moshing there.
To answer the original post, no, you don't have to listen to Punk to be a Leftist. I wouldn't classify NOFX as "Nu-Punk" though.

Precisely!

It's an emotive medium, not a political one. A political message - subliminal or otherwise - may be present, but 'political' music is (to my ear at least) generally poor. When music is made for the sake of music alone, more often than not it turns out well.
musicians who [try] to keep their own beliefs out make cold music, and are probably not very good at all. That's why we get crap pop.
I'd have blamed money myself, but hey ;)
Music with a 'message' often dilutes the music itself. Maybe I'm just a musical puritan or some shit...

Indeed - your musical preference is about as relevant to your political beliefs/views as your socks.

I completely agree with CyM that most great musical movements are a rebellion against the status quo. That indeed produces great music. But many protest songs that have nothing to offer except lyrics often lack any musical value. But there is still lots of music that's not simply 'protest music' that's really groovy. So it works both ways.

Indeed - I just have a nasty habit of disagreeing with people for the sake of disagreement <_<
