After I listened to one of their songs i thought they are weirdos.
After I listened to two of their songs i thought they are gays.
After I listened to five of their songs i thought they are fascists.
After I listened to ten of their songs i thought they are devils.
After I listened to mostly all of their songs i got completely confused :D .

Many people accuse them of being neo-fascists. The band denies all these accusation. The leader of the band says that he doesn't know who he is. Many rammstein fans explain that by singing these kinds of songs they show how weired and god-forgotten our world is, and it needs to be changed for the better (for the better = to the RIGHT or to the LEFT?)

So can anyone give me an idea about who they actually are?

Rammstein are a very cool Band.

They live the rockstar lifestyle and are not ashamed of it. Doesn't mean that they don't support positive changes.

Till Linderman, the lead singer, isn't afraid to push the envelope on alot of topics, but they are far from facsists!

hope that helps

In real life, of course! But when i think about the lyrics of their songs, i somehow feel that they are somewhere far to the right. Plus, I remember in an interview Richard said that his ideology would be "somewhere to the right".

So how do you think, in his songs Till is trying to show the kind of life he wants, or the kind of life he's running away from?

Rammstein doesn't seem political at all. They're a typical "shock rocker" band who uses gimmicks and stuff like that.

I dont think they have a political message...well not really...perhaps more a mindset of being strong, but I dont see much wrong in that, people have to be strong and believe in themselves. Their show...well fascism isnt about putting a good show, putting a good show has been used by the fascists as a tactic to get support, and guess what, it worked.

No, Rammstein aren't fascists. Still they are consciously playing with fascist/nazi symbolism and esthetics. In one of their music videos, they are using Leni Riefenstahl imagery of an Nazi propaganda movie of the olympics for example. Alone their totally exegerated way of that stupid singer in singing German (much like Hitler and other Nazis did in their speeches, especially the way he is pronouncing the "R"), is a reason to not like them for me. This is probably irritating for you to hear it from a Gereman, but for me they are just too German.

BTW: One of their songs, which must sound like a Nazi march for non-German speakers, actually is a confession of them to be leftist. Check HERE (http://www.area51newmexico.com/rammstein_links.html).

...

Sie wollen mein Herz am rechten Fleck They want my heart on the right spot
doch seh ich dann nach unten weg but then I look below
da schlägt es links it beats left there

...

Links zwo drei vier Left two three four left

What they actually wanna say with that metaphoric lyricsis that they are leftist ("it beats left there"), and not right-wing, as everyone is accusing them. I admit, it's kind of originel to have that lyrics with that Nazi march sound. But again they are consciously playing with their Nazi image, and only for German speakers it is clear that this is not some Nazi worshipping song, they probably couldn't have published that song without that "leftist" lyrics, I guess they just made that song because they know stuff like that is selling great in the US, where everyone thinks that they are nazis anyway, I know that many radio station weren't playing that song in the US, another reason why it's probaply cool to listen to rammstein in the US. So beside being a shitty band with bad music, my biggest accusion to them is that they are consciously using Nazi symbolism and esthetics, and generally their Nazi image to sell records, something which is deeply disgusting IMO.

I hope this has vroughtr some light into the confusions you all seem to have with Rammstein.

Well, I'm just a little paranoic about finding political meaning/propaganda everywhere around me. Maybe there is no political meaning at all.

Their show...well fascism isnt about putting a good show
Of course not, but its not the show but the type of society they are representing in their songs.

I've noticed this song a long time ago. Some say the song was made especially to shake off the nazi audience that started to gather around them.

One of their songs, which must sound like a Nazi march for non-German speakers
That's exactly what I imagined in my head before i looked at the lyrics :D
When i listened to "Ich Will" i imagined Hitler speaking to the crowd.

actually is a confession of them to be leftist
I will never believe they are leftists.

only for German speakers it is clear that this is not some Nazi worshipping song
If so, then why are the Germans accusing them of being fascist more often than any other nation?

So beside being a shitty band with bad music
I disagree with you about that
The music is VERY cool (if you don't know the lyrics)
If you don't know the lyrics, most of their songs (especially in "Mutter" album) sound just VERY rebelling. And you can think of any kind of rebellion, not necessarily fascist.

German gives it this extra intensity, they have some songs translated in English, but they just sound weak

Somehow, 'Links 234' reminds of that song 'Einheitsfront'. I don't know why, so don't ask.

If you want a band with a similar style, listen to Laibach. They are a Slovenian band who sing in many different languages, including German. While they toy with Nazi imagery (alot, way more than Rammstein), they are confessed collectivists, and were/are supporters of Soviet and Yugoslav socialism over western capitalism. They are just very philosophical and into the Nazi imagery, although they don't support any of it. Read their interviews, they enjoy the "feeling of alienation" that comes with it. I'm seeing them here in Seattle in November.

They're about as apolitical as a band can get... that being said, they're also talentless hacks.
