Music, especially hip-hop, has always been a favorite subject of mine. I've had some bad experiences with ignorant leftist "rap-haters", but I'm sure this isn't the case here.
Anyway, I would like to see what your favorite albums/musical compilations are of any genre.
The first two are in specific order:
1. Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Quite simply, I can't find a single record that surpasses this in any way. I like her sung verses better.
2. Black Star - Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star
The epitome of the late-nineties hip-hop scene in New York City...and the epitome of rap in general.
And the following are un-ordered:
3. Ras Kass - Soul on Ice
What can I say? After listening to the CD, I had to get the book Soul on Ice...and thanks to Ras Kass, I was introduced to Eldridge Cleaver and politics and communism at that moment.
4. Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Possibly the greatest rock album of all time? Hmmm...I can't find nothing that compares to it.
5. Aceyalone - All Balls Don't Bounce
Interesting rap album...it's too easy to overlook this one, considering that it was just re-released a few months ago after being off the shelves for nearly a decade.
6. Cody ChesnuTT - The Headphone Masterpiece
I don't care if it was recorded in his bedroom, or if it has filler...the overall feeling it leaves me with is that of realism and just good old quality 70's-styled rock and roll...a 2002 release that feels beautifully anachronistic.
7. Nas - Illmatic
Although it's been falling on my "all-time favorites" list little by little, I can't deny that it's quite a release.
8. Common - Resurrection
A much talked-about hip-hop release for good reason...while I don't think you'll find many teenagers talking about Resurrection as much as you'll find them talking about Nas's classic from 1994, there's a reason for this: too much love for the gangster lifestyle.
Favorite songs:
(Oddly, while Lauryn Hill's release is my favorite, I don't have any 'favorite songs' by her on this list.)
1. Talib Kweli - For Women
This is the only track that I will say is in order on this list, and it is my favorite song...ever. If anyone here listens to hip-hop but never heard it, do yourself a favor and get it. Eight minutes long, four verses, deep lyrics and a beautiful beat in the background. Adapted from Nina Simone's "Four Women", which is a story about "four women", just like Kweli's "For Women" although Kweli focuses more on a praise of the female, thus explaining the difference in the titles.
In no specific order:
2. Cody ChesnuTT - Royalty
Cody ChesnuTT - I Look Good in Leather
3. The Velvet Underground - Rock and Roll
The Velvet Underground - Sweet Jane
The Velvet Underground - Waiting for the Man
4. Black Star - Thief in the Night
Black Star - Respiration
5. Ras Kass - Nature of the Threat
Ras Kass - Ordo Abchao (Order out of Chaos)
6. Nas - One Love
Nas - Life's a *****
Nas - It Ain't Hard to Tell
Nas - One Time 4 Your Mind
7. Common - I Used to Love H.E.R.
Common - Retrospect on Life
Common - A Song for Assata
Common - Sum Shit I Wrote
8. Aceyalone - Makeba
While at first this track might be difficult to understand, Aceyalone has a flow that is constantly switched up in order to "suit" the nature of his words. He is reminiscing about an ex-girlfriend of his who hasn't spoken to him in a while and left without a trace and no method of contact. Upon finding her again, he speaks both nicely and with a subtle menacing mockery that can be heard in the tone of his voice. I find it brilliant. Another reason why I like the track is in the fact that I can relate to it when thinking about a particular ex-girlfriend of mine.. :(
8. The Strokes - Last Night
The Strokes - Someday
9. Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
Jimi Hendrix - May This Be Love
Jimi Hendrix - Crosstown Traffic
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile
Jimi Hendrix - Rainy Day, Dream Away
10. Canibus - Poet Laureate II
Well, that was me.

Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
People frequently tell me what a wonderful album this is... I was totally unmoved by it. I guess I'm missing something <_<
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Certainly the greatest 'dirty guitar' album of all time. Noone plays that style like he did.
The rest I either am unfamiliar with, or totally unmoved by. Oh well...
*EDIT*
I guess rather than just commenting I should post some of my own? :D
Without doubt, the greatest two albums of all time (from these ears anyway) are:
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
No music has ever dragged such emotion from me...
Others (no specific order):
King Crimson - Court of the Crimson King
Bob Dylan - Highway 69 Revisited
Rolling Stones - Englands Newest Hitmakers
Carole King - Tapestry
Big Brother and the Holding Company (self titled)
A Silver Mt Zion - They have left us alone, but shafts of light sometimes enter the corners of our room.
There'll be more...

Well, here's something to remember.
I don't know about you, but usually, the first few times I hear an album, I specifically look for those "good-sounding" pop-esque hooks, etc. and immediately judge its "accesibility" through that.
After a few more listens, however, I start to absorb the music into my mind, and most importantly, I look at the lyrics.
And when you're talking about "Miseducation", it is truly Lauryn Hill's lyrics that separate it from other R&B releases. All I could say is that, if you have some time, put on the headphones, and follow the lyrics on some lyric-site when the songs are playing.
I'm glad I actually took the time to follow the words and truly listen to it....I remember the days when "Miseducation" was going to make it on my "mediocre, don't play too much" list......in retrospect, it would have been horrible to allow something like that to happen.
Or maybe I'm completely wrong and maybe the music is completely not in your taste...and I guess if you're not too familiar with her background, some tracks like "Lost Ones" don't even make sense, like, "who is she talking to?!", or when "Mahogony Soul" leaves me thinking, "where did I hear this before?!" It all came together for me one day, though, and it turned out beautifully! :)

Yes, and quite often a deeper inspection will uncover that it's absolute rot

I actually went out and bought the album - despite her alleged comments about not wanting white people listening. I'll give it a crack when I get home - it's been a few weeks since I've had it on anyway
Or maybe I'm completely wrong and maybe the music is completely not in your taste...
It's not technically - but with the exception of repetitive high-pitched noises, I'm game for anything. :D

Do you actually believe this bullshit? :o
When someone first informed me Lauryn Hill said that she would rather have her "kids starve than a white person" buy her music, from the very second I did not believe that crap knowing how much she cares for her children in the first place.
Second, doing some research on my own, I found out through many sources that it was a hoax that had its origins in two places: a caller pretending to be Lauryn Hill sending a message to a radio station, and an interview on MTV that allegedly had her making those statements. No one ever saw it, or heard it for themselves, and MTV denies having that interview.
So, I wouldn't trust that non-sense. :)

Big Brother and the Holding Company (self titled)
Interesting Choice. With such questionable lyrics ("I'm the abodimable snowman"...), it doesn't quite make my list, but the BB & THC (haha, I said THC!), is definately Janis' best backing band.
Favorite albums of all time right now-
The Chambers Brothers-Time has Come Today-If you like soul and psych both, then this is the perfect album. You see what kind of position I'm in.
Hooker and Heat-John Lee Hooker Boogies with Canned Heat (and esp. the great Alan "Owl" Wilson)
Mountain: Climbing!-Just found this LP the other day and have heard it maybe 10 times. Felix Pappalardi was much more than Cream's producer. But, after listening to him and Jack Bruce (try this RZ or anybody and E-Mail me back!) back to back, both their vocal styles and bass-playing abilities sounds EXACTLY the same. In fact, if his wife hadn't killed him in '83 (Gail Collins, who he wrote several songs for back in the day), I'd swear one was a pen name for the other. Check it out, cream fans.
Eric "Not Jimi" Clapton: 461 Ocean Boulevard- Mainly for the entire "B Side" and the first four tracks of the A side, but "I shot the Sheriff" is a nice one, too.
Cream-Live Cream II- Really solid live playing here
Bunny Wailer-Blackheart Man-My LP of this, an original Jamaican pressing, was in such poor quality that I had to take a knife and recarve the center whole. Solid stuff, though. voice is sweet as molasses.
Band of Gypsies-As tempting as it is to just type "Who Knows?" here, I have to elaborate on the greatness of the rest of the album. Cox and Miles both have talent just about on par with Hendrix's. To hear Hendrix playing with a bass player and drummer who really dig down into the lower octaves is really beneficial.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Axis: Bold as Love-Don't get me wrong. Electric Ladyland not only has the best cover of all time (in the UK, at least), but also some of the finest playing in the history of rock. Which is why most other folks have already written about it here. which is why I'm not. Axis: BAL is really impressive, too, because of Mitch and Noel just as much as Jimi. There are literally sounds on this album you will not hear anywhere else, too, which is cool.
Ahmed Abdul-Malik-Jazz Sounds of Africa-If this CD is still being made, I recommend giving it a listen. I don't know why I like this album, but all of the major melodies he play really strike me as good for some reason.
Pharaoh Sanders-Karma-Acid Jazz past its finest. Too bad Leon and Pharaoh both experimented with...Disco
John Coltrane-A Love Supreme-Not to sound like a broken record, but if you haven't heard this yet, drop everything and get it. 95% Percent of the people who have heard it would so the same thing. Between this and "The Creator has a master plan," I almost had an Authentic religious experience.
CCR-Cosmos Factory-Besides the positive effect this album gives me when I listen to it (makes me feel like the Dude), Songs like "Ramble Tamble," "Before You Accuse Me," and their honest cover of Marvin Gaye's grapevine (which trumps to hell and back Ike and Tina's "Proud Mary" cover, I'm afraid) are just plain good.
Spinal Tap-"Music from the movie THIS IS SPINAL TAP"-hahahahaha. Or so I have read.
Ravi Shankar Live in New York-Just found this one for...$2.50. It is great. I can feel my hair growing as I listen to it, even.
The Doors-Morrison Hotel-Yeah. I was one of those poor bastards who didn't even listen to this album in favor of L.A. Woman at first. It is much better in the end, if you can stand its only two hits which are abhorrent.
Taj Mahal-The Real Thing-I really like Taj, and I think live Blues/Soul like he does it can't be matched on any level. He's a really cool guy, too.
Santana-Santana or Abraxas-tough call-Considering Mike Shrieve was 16 when he played on the first album, both of these are really feats to be listened too and marvelled at. Great and catchy (a word I hate to use) albums.
little wing(i'm pretty sure it was on this album...might be mistaken)
And they're all bold as love...just ask the axis

Bill Shatner is a genius.
I've never heard Nimoy do Proud Mary, he did 3 or 4 records that I have not heard before.
