When and why did the tradition of using the word comrade among communists start?

In Spanish, male is compaņero, female compaņera.

In German, male is Genosse, female Genossin.

The Bolsheviks championed the term as a more egalitarian alternative to things like "mr." and "mrs.", and also affixed it to titles to make them sound more socialist, "Comrade Admiral", etc.
