P. Diddy Launches Group for Youth Vote

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer

NEW YORK - Trendsetters, fashionistas, rappers — P. Diddy wants you. Specifically, he's looking for the "sexy people" to help him entice young people and minorities to vote in the presidential election, as part of his new nonpartisan voting initiative called Citizen Change.

"Now we're going to make voting cool," the hip-hop mogul/Broadway actor/marathon runner/fashion designer/perpetual A-lister proclaimed as he trotted out fresh young faces, supermodels and even Democratic strategist James Carville at an event to begin his drive.

"For the first time in history, we're going to make voting fashionable," he said.

Of course, this hardly is the first time a celebrity has been involved in politics, or that rockers or rappers have tried to get out the vote. In recent years, Rock The Vote has enlisted stars including Madonna to appearing in public service announcements urging young people to vote, while MTV and BET have had campaigns to increase voter registration. And another hip-hop mogul, Russell Simmons, has had his Hip-Hop Summit Action Network hold several gatherings in cities across the nation to register voters.

"I think that Rock the Vote and the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network has given birth to this organization," said P. Diddy. "(But) I wanted to launch a new energy at a new time."

Citizen Change plans to link up with MTV, BET, Clear Channel and other media outlets to increase voter awareness, and P. Diddy said there will be registration drives on college campuses and education initiatives to make people more aware of the election and the issues.

The organization will hold functions tied to both the Democratic and Republication conventions. P. Diddy also said both President Bush and Democratic challenger John Kerry will be invited to participate in Citizen Change events.

"It will be equal, 50-50," P. Diddy said.

P. Diddy already has enlisted stars Ben Affleck (news), Leonardo DiCaprio, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige for the effort, and labels such as Ecko, Phat Farm, and his own Sean John have been tapped to create clothing featuring the initiative's motto — "Vote or Die!" — which Diddy himself wore at the news conference.

But it wasn't all serious.

Models Tyson Beckford and Lucas provided eye candy as they modeled the T-shirts, and P. Diddy provided plenty of levity.

When he said the group would charter a jet to travel to swing states to make an impact, he added: "We will have mimosas on the jet. We're going to have the sexiest jet!"

Let me tell you what I don't like...

"The organization will hold functions tied to both the Democratic and Republication conventions. P. Diddy also said both President Bush and Democratic challenger John Kerry will be invited to participate in Citizen Change events. "

and this...

" as part of his new nonpartisan voting initiative called Citizen Change"

Bull. He is partisan to the "2-party" system. He should get Nader involved.
Marginalizing the other candidates is the reason why 3rd parties have such a hard time getting on ballots, debates, or any publicity. It's why they can't qualify for public funding or have their message reach the masses.

Its good to see someone trying to get the youth involved in politics, but I'm not exactly sure how events, such as the Hip Hop Summitt help people to get involved in politics. At last year's Summitt, held at Cobo Hall, in Detroit the main topic was whether or not it was wrong for Nas to accuse Jay-Z of having dick sucking lips.

To all reading this alarming post, I need your help.

Is there anyone out there that has a possible way to get in touch with Sean Combs?

If you know someone who knows someone that knows him, is there such a way as to get in touch with the people of his intiative ?

We need to get his attention on the subject that Ralph Nader needs ackowledge in this plan of his. If indeed this man wants to contribute to the plans of democracy, he should help Nader as well.

-----------------

On a personal level, without sounding dismissive or contradictory to the complete message I am posting, let me get something straight, I live up north in cold cold Canada...

Therefore, I am unfortunately unable to directly change the way this election is being fought, and what the outcome should be.

So, this being said, I feel that Ralph Nader is an ideal host to be president of the U.S.A....

It would be foolish not to plainly see this. I love freedom, REAL freedom, like all of you.

However, realistically, is there a way he can get the power ???

Forgive my rhetorical cynism, the one Nader doesn't want, but I sense that his votes might only diminish any crucial chances for Kerry.

Granted, having Kerry is NOT an ideal candidate for the health of the political world scene, but I feel he is the lesser worst of the two decisively bad choices... And Nader should support Kerry, if only for the sake of the outcome...

I know most of you will hate my post, but this is how I see things, how things are presented to me, up here in the cold north of you all.

At the recent elections we had here in Canada, I chose to look at the lesser bad of two ones in our last election, the Liberal party, instead of the filthy retarded Conservatives.

And although I did NOT vote, I did pressure LOTS of people to listen to common sense and scrap their votes instead of leaning towards the Conservs... if they chose not to vote for the Liberals, a clearer shade of dark.

I wrote to a local paper and asked them to place a public service notice pleading people to steer clear of the Conservatives.

------------------------

Now back to the reply I originally started with, I do encourage people who vote do whatever they feel is right, be it encourage and pressure Puffy to take Nader into consideration, chose not to vote, or concentrate on an outcome that, although not the ideal and logical choice in our left leaning views, is, in my humble opinion, more realistic in the American's perception of what is a good leader; one who is both stuck up and a cappie because americans in the large sense have been conditionned to hate left, but one who also has a foothole in reality and does completely and justly acknowledge:

minorities

under privileged groups of all walks of life,

those who oppose the set powers, and their decisions.

I know the former seems to fuck up the latter part of that last paragraph, but please think about it.

One thing is sure, regardless of what happens:

George Walker Bush has to be taken out of office on November 2nd !

This is pathetic. This is only going to warm young voters to either Democrats or Republicans and leave them with no knowledge that there is an alternative. Or maybe they will know, but since Nader ain't invited to this little shin dig, he won't be a "cool" candidate. After all, this whole thing as about making voting cool. But hey, maybe Mase will be there!

Hahahaha.... Very funny...

It's really funny trying to be a smartass, and remaining on the commentary side of things instead of trying to find concrete, actual solutions to an eminently apocalyptical problem like a Bush/Cheney reelection.....

Any musicians who worked with Puffy, any reporters with inside contacts, any club related employees who might have any knowledge of Puffie's REAL contact info ???

Any computer wizz with contacts to the the managers of his website, or the Citizen Change site that may have links to how to reach him ???

Please, COME ON people, a little conscience here please...

This situation is going to kill us all if Bush gets back on track four more years...

Funny and infantile answers like the cell phone fiasco will never get us anywhere!!!!

I understand that I am supposed to be patient with "newbies"...and I really make an effort, honestly.

But from what some of you folks have said, it's pretty clear that you have zero understanding of the essential nature of bourgeois "democracy".

It's all fake!

Yeah...a complete charade that is totally meaningless!

Stretching the truth a bit aren't we? In the GRAND scheme of things it's meaningless. However these elections do have an effect on people's day to day lives

I can't believe that anyone would actually welcome this.
To quote Zack de la Rocha;
"If Ronald Reagan were to be a rap star, he'd be P. Diddy."
I think that sums Sean Combes up pretty well.

Yes...but the people have no effect on what those guys decide to do after they're in office.
