Edward L. Lansdale went to the Philippines while working with the CIA to put down the nationalistic uprising of the Hukbalahaps, also called the Huks. He used various methods which played on the superstitions of the peasents and even the Huks themselves.
One of these was his use of a mythical vampire called the asuang. Rumours were spread in the peasent villages that an asuang was living in the hills where the Huks were based.
A Huk guerilla was also quietly snatched by military forces; two holes were punctured in his neck, then he was hung upside down in order to drain his blood. The man was then returned to the Huk's patrol trail where Huks found him once again, and were most likely terrified as the Huk forces were just as superstitious as the peasents in the area.
Another method that Lansing used was to have a plane fly over peasent towns behind cloud cover while curses were chanted threatening anybody who aided the Hukbalahaps.
Edward L. Lansdale truly symbolizes the sleazy methods that the U.S. Government is willing to use to further its policies.
