Several webmasters, myself included, have decided to create a progressive newsletter to be sent via email. The newsletter is going to feature editorials on The War on Terror, Iraq, the upcoming election, civil liberties, labor issues, feminist issues, the drug war, and many other issues that are facing the world today. It will feature, along with the editorials, political art (poetry, music, film, comic strips, etc. with a political spin), activism, essays on political philosophy, and anything else that we may think of... If you've got an idea other than those listed, do not feel afraid to send it in!
I'm hoping to send the first edition of this newsletter out 2-4 weeks from now, depending on the time it takes us to collect enough content and to collect enough email addresses to justify sending it. You can help! If you're interested in contributing anything and having your voice heard, send it to me at [email protected] or post it in this thread. If you'd like to receive it, simply post your email in this thread, or email it to me. If you have a website, ask your viewers to contribute or post. Ask them on other message boards! Note: this is not affiliated with my webpage, this is a communal effort!
Anyone can receive this, no matter political views, in fact, I would sincerely like it if a large population of conservatives and moderates would read this.
So please, help us spread the good news that is socialism!
To give you an idea of what we need, here's an essay that will no doubt be in the first issue.
Defeating Terrorism
Terrorism is a very real and very ominous threat to the world today. If it is not dealt with correctly and carefully, much bloodshed, death, and hatred will result. The situation in the Middle East must be examined and various motivations for terrorist acts must be taken into account.
Why is it that twenty people hate the United States strongly enough to spend several years learning to fly an airplane, for the sole purpose of killing themselves and as many Americans as possible?
Perhaps the reason 9/11 occurred is because impoverished Muslims see the USA as a gluttonous country full of billionaires driving SUVs, watching TV, and eating at fast food restaurants while their people starve. Desperate people commit desperate acts, and this population as a whole has nothing left to loose.
This injustice, of the western world doing nothing to ease their suffering, is enough reason to arouse hatred; but when the Western world has plundered their territories in recent years to control the oil profits, bombing their cities in the process; and supported and funded dictators who were oppressing the common people, the hatred of the United States in the Middle East has flared out of control.
It is common for people to blame Islam for influencing the terrorist. However, this cannot possibly be true, Islam is a peaceful religion in nature. There are many hateful ideologies that exist, but they do not cause this degree of organized murder. The fact is, people will act the way the want to, and use a commonly cherished source, such as religion, to ethically justify it to themselves and to society. This is similar to the approach taken by American slave owners, who would point out a passage that justified slavery, or to the modern anti-homosexual movement, where people discount the teachings of Christ in favor of a passage that labels homosexuality as a sin so that they can go to the funerals of Aids victims and scream God hates fags.
Death to the infidel doesnt influence the way you live your life unless there is an infidel that you wish to see dead.
Groups of people become zealous and irrational when their fundamental needs are not being fulfilled, and will be enticed by something that offers hope and revenge, such as religion. Races become clannish, irrational, violent, and obsessive when in intense poverty. However, there is difficulty escaping the poverty, as there are few opportunities and little wealth available. The cycle of poverty and ineffective responses to poverty, irrationality, continues leaving a dangerous and hopeless people. To end the cycle, the civilization must obtain the necessity it lacks, and for this to happen, the outside world must give aid and help stimulate their economy. A less desperate civilization would accept liberty, logic, and tolerance far more than a desperate one.
There is no mutually assured destruction in this War on Terrorism, a small group of terrorists can destroy millions of US citizens and our government would still have no tangible enemy. It takes so few people to kill so many in todays world that starting a war cannot possibly achieve any progress. For a war against individuals to be successful, the entire population that resents the United Sates and its foreign policy would have to be neutralized, and genocide is never ethically justifiable. To avoid this degenerating into genocide, the western world must fix the root problem of the Islamic peoples, which is poverty, through economic aid.
