I'm pretty sure Hendrix is a leftie... he grew up in a racist society and was poor most of his life
About The Kings Of Leon... They seem the kind of guys to be left wing...Joe's Head clearly shows they were Hendrix fans...Maybe their dad's right wing-edness made them want to be left wing. They have commented how they weren't exaclty fans of their dad...

Not all of these are bands, but, still, I shall list them. The Clash - Left wing. The only band that matters/mattered.
Tchaikovsky - He's not a band. He was also long dead before "leftism" in its modern sense existed.
Shostakovich - Well, he lived in the Soviet Union, but was frequently dug into by the censors and by Stalin. Apolitical, I'd say. (Not a band, either.)
Midnight Oil - Left wing, pro-reconciliation and all that. Unfortunately their former lead singer has just sold out to a corporation he wrote an entire song to deride! Great one, Garrett.
Bob Marley - I'm going be iron, like a lion, in Zion...
Sting - Bugger The Police, Sting's better by himself.
Red Army Choir - I don't think I need to explain the politics of singing Bolsheviks ;)
Hendrix - Well. Enough said.

I know, I'm not critisizing them, just saying, they ARE right wing.
I suspect Norma Jean aren't leftist, they're religious and all that.

A couple notes on some of the bands/artists mentioned:Hendrix was anti-communist and supported the Vietnam war,Pete Townsend of the Who originally supported the Iraq war but has since changed his mind,Bob Dylan is a Zionist and was at one time a fundamentalist christian,Rush as stated earlier are right wing and are influenced by Ayn Rand.

Sepultura - agree. They're cool.
But also: Napalm Death
Here's the lyric's for the 2002 release, Continuing War on Stupidity:
There's only one war to end all war
It's the loathing behind the eyes
And when the eyes stay out of focus
Fizxed on a point that spurns compassion
And goads for challenge
Thatcher, Reagan, Bush - that's one three-headed beast
It's the loathing behind the eyes
And when those eyes conceal the zealot
Winter than white, but the robots buy it
They clap and cheer
Kudos to bask in the belly of the beast
Procreation of the wicked
Gifted remits to exceed
Initation of the witless
Serve indignant dignitaries
Trample, smoke out, pull all foreign weeds
Don't cap oil stacks, guard the globe for keeps
Only one war!
Cosy with the clan, treat withdrawal as attack
Old boy network, new world prison camp
Only one war!
Not my president
Nor his fellow sham - the charlatan
Media mouthpiece screams dignity
Glaring irony - this is news to me
...straight from the band that gave us Multinational Corporations in 1987.

Sepultura and Napalm Death are both great bands, and I would say Sepultura is one of the best thrash metal bands of all time.
A few other leftist bands I'd like to mention are Aus-Rotten, Agnostic Front and Sick of it All.

Shockingly, no one mentioned System of A Down. They have been blacklisted by the FBI for anti-war, anti-imperialism statements and have written lyrics like these:
PRISON SONG
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison,
Following the rights movements
You clamped on with your iron fists,
Drugs became conveniently
Available for all the kids,
Following the rights movements
You clamped on with your iron fists,
Drugs became conveniently
Available for all the kids,
I buy my crack, my smack, my *****,
Right here in Hollywood,
Nearly 2 million Americans are incarcerated
In the prison system,
Prison system of the U.S.
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison, (for you and me to live in)
Another prison system,
Another prison system,
Another prison system. (for you and me to live in)
Minor drug offenders fill your prisons
You don't even flinch
All our taxes paying for your wars
Against the new non-rich,
Minor drug offenders fill your prisons
You don't even flinch
All our taxes paying for your wars
Against the new non-rich,
I buy my crack, my smack, my *****,
Right here in Hollywood,
The percentage of Americans in the prison system
Prison system, has doubled since 1985,
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison, (for you and me to live in)
Another prison system,
Another prison system,
Another prison system. (for you and me to live in)
For you and I, for you and I , for you and I.
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison,
For you and me,
Oh baby, you and me.
All research and successful drug policy show
That treatment should be increased,
And law enforcement decreased,
While abolishing mandatory minimum sentences,
All research and successful drug policy show
That treatment should be increased,
And law enforcement decreased,
While abolishing mandatory minimum sentences.
Utilizing drugs to pay for secret wars around the world,
Drugs are now your global policy,
Now you police the globe,
I buy my crack, my smack, my *****,
Right here in Hollywood,
Drug money is used to rig elections,
And train brutal corporate sponsored
Dictators around the world.
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison, (for you and me to live in)
Another prison system,
Another prison system,
Another prison system. (for you and me to live in)
For you and I, for you and I , for you and I.
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison,
They're trying to build a prison,
For you and me,
Oh baby, you and me.
BOOM!
I've been walking through your streets,
Where all your money's earning,
Where all your building's crying
And clueless neckties working,
Revolving fake lawn houses,
Housing all your fears,
Desensitized by TV,
Overbearing advertising,
God of consumerism,
And all your crooked pictures
Looking good, mirrorism,
Filtering information,
For the public eye,
Designed for profiteering,
Your neighbor, what a guy.
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM,
Every time you drop the bomb,
You kill the god your child has born,
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM.
Modern globalization,
Coupled with condemnations,
Unnecessary death,
Matador corporations,
Puppeting your frustrations,
With the blinded flag,
Manufacturing consent,
Is the name of the game,
The bottom line is money,
Nobody gives a fuck.
4000 hungry children leave us per hour,
From starvation,
While billions are spent on bombs,
Creating death showers.
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM,
Every time you drop the bomb,
You kill the god your child has born,
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM
BOOM/BOOM/BOOM/BOOM/BOOM/BOOM/BOOM
Why, why, why, why must we kill, kill, kill, kill
Our own, own, own, own kind...
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM,
Every time you drop the bomb,
You kill the god your child has born,
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM
BOOM/BOOM/BOOM/BOOM/BOOM/BOOM/BOOM
Every time you drop the bomb.

What ever happened to the days when a person's favourite bands could be narrowed down to a few, rather than an entire CD collection
My favourite band is Rage against the Machine, I'm now waiting for Zack de la Rocha's solo album.

Here are my favourite set of System of a Down lyrics:
System of a Down War? lyrics
Lyrics > System of a Down lyrics > System of a Down War? lyrics
System of a Down, War?
Dark is the light,
The man you fight,
With all your prayers, incantations,
Running away, a trivial day,
Of judgment and deliverance,
To whom was sold, this bounty soul,
A gentile or a priest ?
Who victored over, the Seljuks,
When the holy land was taken
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens
Was it the riches, of the land,
Powers of bright darkness,
That lead the noble, to the East,
To fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens
We must call upon our bright darkness,
Beliefs, they're the bullets of the wicked,
One was written on the sword,
For you must enter a room to destroy it,
International security,
Call of the righteous man,
Needs a reason to kill man,
History teaches us so,
The reason he must attain,
Must be approved by his God,
His child, partisan brother of war,
Of war, we don't speak anymore,
Of war, we don't speak anymore,
Of war, we don't speak anymore,
Of war, we don't speak anymore,
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens
We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens

Bad Religion (my absolute favorite), Anti-Flag, Rise Against, Rage, NOFX, and Pennywise are all left-wing.
Then I like Flogging Molly, Screeching Weasel and the Vandals, who probaly are left-wing, but don't sing political songs.

Ohh.. Some swedish bands.. Dropkick Murphys and The International Noise Conspiracy...niiice
Overall most artists that play real music (a consider something to be real music when you feel that someone has put his whole soul in the music) are left wing, thats just have it is. Even though many artist may be left wing but do not know much about politics. But well.. it's better to be ignorant left wing than right wing. =9

You have some good tastes, my friend!
Nice list.
I don't particularly agree with mc5, iggy pop, patti smith, t-rex, blind guardian, and bruce springsteen.
Black Sabbath I think are kind of mediocre.
And I never really cought on to anything by the Stones other than some of their big successes.
And Bruce Springsteen is the single most over rated musician ever, I think.
To the artists you mentioned, I'd like to emphasize Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Eric Clapton, the Beatles, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens, and Simon and Garfunkle.

I must be confused. The title of this thread refers to bands that are/were left wing or who were poseurs. Now that said how can argue about MC5, Patti Smith, or even Black Sabbath (who were anything but mediocre for their first 5 or 6 albums) not being left wing? I can't speak about some of the others that Ziggy mentioned but even Bruce Springsteen (I never cared for him either) has written many songs from a working class perspective. And wrote that song about the cops murdering Amadou(sp?) Diallo.
Victor, then you go on to mention the usual suspects notably Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Yes, ZZ Top, Alman Bros... Have any of these artists ever written left wing a political song or taken a left wing stance on anything? Yes I know some of those you listed certainly have done some fine musical as well as political work but you seem to be missing the point of the topic.
