Earth day is an annual observation of environmental awareness held every April 22 in the States. The first one was April 22, 1970 to coincide with the Clean Air Act that was passed by congress. I guess you could say it the beginning of the Green movement as prior to that there really weren't any enviromental laws to speak of. It kicked into gear the recycling program and energy conservation, and also brought awareness of the hazards of dumping toxic waste into landfills and fresh water sources.
