"In the 1960s "only" three dollars flowed North for every dollar flowing South; by the late 1990s, after 30 years of unprecedented growth and increasing globalization, the ratio had grown to seven to one.

"In 1970 the richest 10 per cent of the world's citizens earned 19 times as much as the poorest 10 per cent. By 1997, this ratio had increased to 27:1 and the wealthiest 1 per cent of the world's people commanded the same income as the poorest 57 per cent. Just 25 million rich Americans (0.4 per cent of the world's people) had a combined income greater than that of the poorest 2 billion of the world's people (43 per cent of the total population). As I said, Castro had a point.

"All of which raises a final question: Is it possible that the conventional myth merely serves as cover for a hidden parallel agenda?"

This is an outstanding piece about the relationship between the popular media fiction of the world and the suffering caused by neoliberal economics. The lies of the ruling class cannot stand up to the reality of the world, and that point needs to be constantly remembered.

And still the capitalist classes try to tell us that they're helping the poor throughout the world.

Vox, thank you for bringing this subject to light. The "Chicago Boys" have corrupted and obliterated the economies of the south. That shithole school in Chicago where neoliberalism has its birth has totally ruined and destroyed the latin american economies. That plus the thieves and politicians that we've had for the past half century.

elizquierdista,

You bet. Just look at what the IMF has done to Argentina (http://www.commondreams.org/views02/0422-04.htm). And, of course, the CIA is always ready to help out, too (http://www.fas.org/irp/ops/policy/church-chile.htm).

Neoliberalism doesn't work. Rather, I should say, it works great for the ruling class, but not so good for everyone else. If you want a system that will keep people powerless, neoliberalism is wonderful.

I think that the Left often fails because it doesn't connect economic policy to foriegn policy. There's no need for conspiracy theories, but to neglect the interdepedent nature of economics and politics is a losing proposition. That's why I think this article is so important.

What to put in it's place? For one thing, a sustainable economy. That will HAVE to come sooner or later, preferably sooner. It would also be nice to have a system that ends the exploitation of people too, don't you think??
