It's definitely a great shame to France that le Pen even got to the final.... And French have to choose between right-winger and extreme right-winger. Well, I would choose Chirac of course although he is not the best candidat either.

Le Pen is the founder of the National Front. He called the Holocaust a "detail of history." There is little chance that he'll win, but hopefully this will motivate the Left in France, and througout Europe, to get their act together.

Good point, and I think they will. I read today that there are protests about Le Pen's minor victory. Hopefully this will be a wake-up call to those that would have otherwise not been actively involved.

From what I've read, Chirac is expected to win the final round and that Le Pen was only really voted for to show Chirac that there is discontent with him and that he'll have to change things.

BoZG - Yeah, the French people are said to vote in the first round with their hearts, and the second round with their heads. Basically, they'll vote for someone minor in the first round just to shock the major players into action. It appears that disillusioned moderate righties turned to Le Penn instead of Chirac.

However, there is a deeper reason for Le Penn's new found popularity. Recently in France, (allegedly) pro-Palestine supporters have attacked Jewish homes and communities. Of course, Le Penn et al blamed this on the immigrants from Arab Africa. This led to him getting considerable support from, believe it or not, French Jews. It appears that Le Penn is little more than a populist. Fuck him.

Le Pen has no chance of winning now. All the left wing voters have realised their mistake by not voting and will make shure they'll do it on May 5th, and alll the left parties are for Chirac "The lesser of two evils".

So the 30% non voter will shurely drop after that.

And with Jospin quiting, we may also see a reorganisation of the Socialists and left parties in general, wich could be a good thing for the legislativ elections this summer. New face, new ideas, new hope.

Since Le Pen got about 17% of the vote, in the second round this might stay more or less the same, but the Chirac vote will be much higher because EVERYBODY ELSE will vote for him. Some are saying he may get up to 80%.

But it is a shame the left seems to have collapsed completely. Surely there are millions of left-wing people in France. They have no candidate to choose that supports their view at all.

It is a worrying development, showing the rise of the far-right accross europe. Austria has a coalition coalition government including the fascist "freedom party". That is why the EU has imposed sanctions on Austria. The far-right have been doing well in the netherlands, and are predicted to do well in germany in september. Even the BNP in britain is gaining popularity in some areas.

Which might tell you that maybe underneath the surface a good majority of the French feel this way. A French friend of mine told me that some of the old people strongly feel that France should be for the French. He also told me that the Corsicans bomb all the Parisian summer homes in Corsica. Europe has become a melting pot of all cultures and it would be a shame if people like Le Pen would be elected.
