One of the most profitable businesses these days is the private military industry, or mercenaries. Perhaps the most infamous of these is Executive Outcomes, which is based out South Africa. However the US has been utilizing private soldiers for some time now as well.

A company based out of Virginia called Military Proffesional Resources Inc. (MPRI) which was founded and is run by ex-Special Ops soldiers has millions of dollars in US govt. contracts, providing everything from intel anyalist, to"security forces" in places like Bosnia, Kosovo, Colombia and Iraq.

A large number of these mercs are employed from several different companies in Iraq. Part of the Abu Grahib prisoner abuse scandal is the fact that non-US military contractors were carrying out interegations.

Needless to say, the US government loves using private contractors for several reasons; they don't have to train or pay to equip them, they don't have to pay their medical expenses and above all; when they die the government doesn't have to list them as combat fatalities. I theorize that eventually there will be no national army, that the military business will become completely private, as the US government will simply hand out contracts to the lowest bidder to go do their dirty work abroad.

Isn't that similar to what happened to Rome?
