Anybody have an opinion on this there is a fair bit of debate about it. I say that Ed Kuepper and The Saints pretty much defined early punk rather than invented but they are pretty close. They pre date the Sex Pistols after all. Viva Oz the birth of punk

No, it's pretty well established that the Ramones were the first punk band, the Sex Pistols were like a month behind (or possibly at the same time). We can debate all day as to who laid down the foundations (New York Dolls, Velvet Underground), but it is pretty much accepted as fact that it was the Pistols and the Ramones.

And Bazza is correct that the Sonics played what can be described as punk.

But still does all this matter? I mean there's a huge difference between wellthought music such as Stooges and then the usual proto punk crap.
The word punk has lost almost all meaning today.

MC5, the Stooges, the Sonics, Velvet Underground, we can debate all day as to whether these guys actually started punk or were just "pre" punk. I think if you look at punk on a pretty superficial level then it becomes easier to see what the the Ramones, and mostly the Pistols, actually started. I mean, punk is more than just music. I think the Pistols should be thought of as the first punk band simply because they defined the attitude, and the style of punk. Of course there have been bands that sounded similair, but there is more to it than that (though I do think the Pistols brought alot of new stuff to the table musically as well).

No wait I'll say something of worth, Radio Birdman and the Scientists were also true innovators but not inventors. And for your miserable sake may I just say that the Pre-punk* band The Saints formed in 1973, you clearly don't know Pre-Punk* in the form of the Stooges, MC5 and the like dates back to '66-'67.
