This movie opened up the worlds eye's To Japanese Animation.
The beggingin starts in 1988 where another nuke is dropped on Tokyo ending world war 3.
And i later in post war times, there is neo tokyo (new tokyo) and the old tokyo where drugs, crime etc. takes place.
Revolutioaries are fighting against the japanese governemnt while a group of doctors are turning a group of 28 kids into Superhumans.
A superhuman #28 named akira is locked away in a highly protected cell and kept from the rest of the world or it will be the apolocypse
then when a biker teen named tetsuo goes into the hospital for and injury treatement the group of doctors turn him into a super human.

this great combination of sci-fi/action will be sure to please all audiences by japanese director Katsushiro Otomo

I didnt particularly enjoy Akira do to the fact of the radical plot change at the end, the whole birth of the universe thing was just kinda weird. Although i did enoy some animes. Ghost in the Shell, Jin Roh, Princess Monoke, Spirited Away, the whole cowboy bebop series were great.

I've seen this movie about a million times (I own it) My favorite part is the motorcycle sequence in the beggining of the movie.

If you liked Akira, you should also check out Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories! Another classic SF anime.
Also check out Robot Carnival, Bubblegum Crisis (and the remake - Tokyo 2040), the Robotech series, the Japanese version of Transformers - The Movie, well the list is pretty much endless... :)

I didn't mention it because I didn't really like it. Can anybody tell me the name of a certain Manga, I'll give a brief description of it: It was about cyborgs part human part robot and organ hunters operated in the underworld or something like that (it's vague to me) they killed people and ripped out spines and things then re-sold them. The main character was a boy (may of been cyborg?) and he was saving enough money to be able to buy his way into the utopian clean city that was like an island suspended in the sky, where all the rich lived. Basically he really wanted to escape the Earth's surface where all the poor lived and where the rich people on the floating island dumped their garbage. This and Ninja Scroll are my two fave manga's, Akira is third and I have a fourth which I also don't know the name of. Has anyone seen this awesome Manga I'm talking about? what is it called?

o hahahahaha
i rented like 10 of them from the library
never got a chance to read them
i was to busy reading akira
by the way i reccomend the Akira Mangas
they go way way way way way more into detail then the movie
the movie kinda just summerizes the mangas
i think like an hour into the movie and ur only on the second book or somtin like that

Great movie. Kind of confusing at times, but still awsome. What was up with tetsuo becoming a big blobby baby thing at the end and all?

When I first saw the movie a few years ago it made no sense, and it still does not. Then I read the grapgic novels and it made about 400 more times more sense than the movie, that and they are awesome anyway.
Yummmy.

Never ever try to drive a car on shrooms, I don't even know how to drive when I'm straight, they seriously make travel weird. Blue MEANIES rULE. Watch Battle Angel high it's far more fun.

Anime rules....I'm a serious anime/manga fan and I personally think Akira was a let-down. Ghost In The Shell, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Escaflowne, Wings Of Honneamise and Evangelion - now they're CLASSICS.

If Akira could be given 3 1/2 stars in the cable ratings then it can't be that bad ^^
Just for an idea of scale-
The Godfather- 4 stars
Rocky- 4 stars
Rain Man- 4 stars
Once upon a Time in the West- 3 1/2 stars
X2- 3 stars
Just Married- 1 star
Friday- 1 1/2 stars

Well you definitely are living up to you name, Kikki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away are kids movies.

And what is wrong with kids movies? Is it the lack of violence? sex? swearing? A movie doesn't need to ride on its aldut content. A movie can simply be enjoyable. As a kid (younger than now) I used to love watching all the disney classics like Lion King. Last year when I saw Spirited Away it reminded me of then. If you actually watch ANY of Miyazaki's stuff you'll undestand and love it.

First off all, Disney is an imperialist enterprise, on top of that you can't group the movies you mentioned in with Akira. Akira is far and away the best anime out there.

Hmm....is it just me or does that make you sound just a tad fascist? Have you seen every single anime ever created, being created and to be created? no? Thought as much. that means you can't just declare Akira the best. And the fact that Disney are imperialist doesn't mean Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli are. Have you ever actually seen one of Miyazaki's movies? If not then you should shut up, watch one, then come back and lecture me on kids movies.

I've seen all the moovies you've seen before and while I'm not saying that films like Kikki's Delivery Service, weren't enjoyable, I'm saying that you cannot call them better than Akira and I'll stand by my statement that Akira is the best anime ever made, untill I see one that makes me think otherwise, and so far after watching hundreds of animes I have yet to find one.

Well I prefer them...Akira was a bit...well....dull in my honest opinion. Watch Escaflowne. THAT'll change your mind.

Has anyone ever heard of Voltes-V? It's one of the most famous Japanese cartoons here in my country. It was first shown here during the 70s during the dictatorship of former President Marcos. According to him, it was very violent and not good for children so he ordered its banning. But people just say that he is just afraid that people might do the same thing in the cartoon--fighting aganinst the evil empire called the Bozanians which maybe represents his regime.

It might be different, and in a leage of its own, but I think there are too many animes to single out just one and declare it the best.
I think Akira is best thought of as a pilot or a prototype of mature animation.

Yes, it may be the most important anime out there, but it sure as hell is NOT the best in most people's opinion.
