Is that the one that the Clash's White Riot is in twice? It's good, but is it really THAT good? Okay, maybe it is...
As for Masters of War, one of the most passionate and powerful songs ever written. I can't describe how good it is...

I'm surprised that the Redskins didn't make the top 100.

Billy Bragg is in there with "There Is Power In A Union" with a photo of some Durham Miners during the 1984-1985 miners strike - the one been arrested is Norman Strike. But this song was released after the strike in 1986. While the Redskins song about the Miners strike "Keep On Keepin' On" was released during the year long strike and is a far better protest song. As is the b-side to their second single "Uninoize".

what about "Fortunate Son" by Creedence?
Some folks are born, made to wave the flag
Ooh they're red white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief"
Ooh they point the cannon at you Lord

It ain't me it ain't me I ain't no senator's son son.
It ain't me it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one no
Yeah!

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord don't they help themselves oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one.
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no

what about April 29 1992 by Sublime
its kinda a ballad about there expierences with the miami riots

[I don't know if you can, but can you get an order for Ons, that's O-N-S,
Junior Market, the address is 1934 East Aneheim, all the windows are
busted out, and it's like a free-for-all in here and uh the owner should
at least come down here and see if he can secure his business-
if he wants to]

April 26th, 1992
There was a riot on the streets
Tell me where were you?
You were sittin' home watchin' your TV
While I was participating in some anarchy

First spot we hit it was my liquor store
I finally got all that alcohol I can't afford
With red lights flashin' time to retire
And then we turned that liquor store into a structure fire.

Next stop we hit it was the music shop
It only took one brick to make that window drop
Finally we got our own p.a.
Where do you think I got this guitar that you're hearing today? ey!

[Call fire at ??? mobile station at Alamedas and Anahiem,
its, ah, flaming up good]
[10-4 Alamedas and Anahiem]
Homicide, never doin' no time!

When we returned to the pad to unload everything
It dawned on me that I need new home furnishings
So once again we filled the van until it was full
Since that day my livin' room's been more comfortable
Cause everybody in the hood has had it up to here
It's getting harder and harder and harder each and every year
Some kids went in a store with their mother
I saw her when she came out she was gettin some peppers
They said it was for the black man,
they said it was for the mexican
And not for the white man
But if you look at the streets
It wasn't about Rodney King
It's bout this fucked up situation and these fucked up police
It's about coming up
And staying on top
And screamin' 187 on a mother fuckin' cop
It's not written on the paper it's on the wall
National guard??!
Smoke from all around!

[Units- Units be advised of an attempt 211 to arrest now at 938 Temple, 9-3-8
Temple, many subjects with bats trying to get inside the CB's
house...they're trying to kill him]
As long as I'm alive, I'm a live el rico.

Let it burn
Wanna let it burn
Wanna let it burn
Wanna wanna let it burn

Riots on the streets of Miami
W'oh, Riots on the streets of Chicago
On the streets of Long Beach
And San Francisco (Boise Idaho)
Riots on the streets of Kansas City (Salt Lake, Hunnington Beach, CA)
Tuscalusa, Alabama ( Compton Michigan)
Cleveland, Ohio (Pensacola)
Fountain Valley (Texas, Barstow - Let's do this every year),
Paramount, Victorville (Twice a Year), Eugene OR
Eureka, CA (Let it burn, let it burn)
Hesperia (Oh, ya let it burn, wont'cha wont'cha let it burn)
Santa Barbara, Nevada, Phoenix Arizona, San Diego, Lakewood Florida
Fuckin 29 Palms.

I've always thought the most relevant protest song is Give Peace a chance by John Lennon.

If you look at when and how it was written, it was very profoundly important back then, and if you look at the state of world affairs today, damn this song is still really relevant.

One of those timeless songs...

Timeless 'cause man is a stupid war-hungry animal and always will be.

Anybody here heard of Capdown, they write some amazing portests songs, like the below,

*****es and Nike Shoes

There are still some that say I should be stuck in my ways
Restricted in my style, livin' ground hog days
It's so easy for you to just keep on dismissing
Ready to judge but unable to listen
To real fuckin' people with their own set of views
Not just some noise about *****es and nike shoes
We got a lot to say and plenty to shout about
We gonna take you to eradicate any doubt

No more, this time
Freedom of speech and freeom of sound for all of time

Positivity

You think out loud
Try to convince me that my dreams lie high out of reach
In the sky, in the clouds
I have to say, I think you're wrong
Why should I try to find a way to make me think and feel the same?
It's all about limiting your future
How comes this way?
What the fuck are we tryin' to say?
I plan to enjoy and achieve within my lifetime
And no amount of negativity will be enough to change me

This time I stand and I'm not alone
This is my future
This is my priority
It may take a long time
But I'll be risin' up
Don't mean I think I tuff
But it means I move on
Positively, positivity
Don't look but see
Be aware cos shit ain't the way it has to be

and sleep now in the fire has a to be one of the worst rage against the machine songs...

Vietnow is good...

Bullet in the head would have to be the best protest song...

L.A. riots.

I'm surprised The Clash's Guns of Brixton, or Clampdown aren't on that list.

How about System of A Down's "Prison Song", and/or "Boom"?

For Bob Marley/Wailers, I would have picked "War".

Along those lines, I would also add Peter Tosh's "Downpresser" and "Equal Rights"

...and Bunny Wailer's "Serious Thing"

Cat Stevens "Peace Train" which he re-released a year ago or so over for the antiwar movement.

Jefferson Airplane "Volunteers"

The Doors "Five to One"

Black Sabbath "War Pigs"

Lennon slanders Mao. Fuck that song.

They should have Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's "The Message".

Maybe its in there but my mind is too cloudy from the drinking last night to look again. I think the song "Signs" by Tesla (or some band before them) should be in there.

Its The Five Man Electical Band that did "Signs" originaly. The only good song Tesla ever recorded because those posers did not write it.

"Abolish Government" by True Sounds of Liberty should be on the list.

I don't think it's racists comeing from the clash, It's about some west indian riots in Brixton sometime in the 70's. I don't think there implying it was a "white" persons riot.

I still see that the Clash's White Riot was listed twice at both #30 and #42. I'm also not sure why Summertime Blues is a protest song, though I can't recall the lyrics at the moment. It is a great song musically.

I dont like this top 100 list at all because there are so many great indie songs out there(check out riotfolk.org) and alot of these songs would not work well out on a sidewalk with nothing but a acoustic guitar and a metal barrel. They are good songs but i dont think we'll hear them on the picket line.

Certainly not racist. I'm not sure why one would get that impression if they actually listen to the song.

Here's the lyrics:

White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own
White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

Black people gotta lot a problems
But they don't mind throwing a brick
White people go to school
Where they teach you how to be thick

An' everybody's doing
Just what they're told to
An' nobody wants
To go to jail!

All the power's in the hands
Of people rich enough to buy it
While we walk the street
Too chicken to even try it

Everybody's doing
Just what they're told to
Nobody wants
To go to jail!

Are you taking over
Or are you taking orders?
Are you going backwards
Or are you going forwards?

I can't believe nobody even mentioned the Internationale. Maybe there's no punk version of it, but it is The original protest song of 1870.

"And if, those cannibals keep trying, to sacrifice us to their pride, they soon will hear the bullets flying, we'll shoot the generals on our side"

"So comrades come rally, and the last fight we'll face, The Internationale, unites the human race"

Mp3's of it in almost any language:
