He isn't the leader, Comandante Esther is. Thats why he is Sub-Comandante Marcos, not Comandante Marcos. The only reason people think he is the leader is because he can speak perfect english, while the other zapatistas can only speak spanish.

Most have trouble with Spanish, they speak their Mayan dialects. I wasn't aware that Marcos spoke English, if that's true.

yea, an american reporter started asking questions to esther, but she couldn't answer, so Marcos went up to the reporter and started making conversation with him.

Hasn't the zapatistas accepted to have those areas they already held and then let the rest of mexico to rot?
That's the impression I have been getting from reading about them recently.

A lot of them speak indigenous tongues. Not all, its not a monolithic group.

In answer to your ignorant question,
Currently the Mayan people are being forced out of the Lacendonian rain forest so that it can be mined, drilled and the lumber cut.

People are going into villages from all over the world as observers from human rights organizations to stop the violence.

The people in Chiapas are in complete solidarity with other groups, but this struggle is enormous. Just education itself when the government is not providing in some areas is enormous. It seems like Mexico City said fine, then provide all the social services while we rake in the money in some instances.

This responsiblity is very taxing.

Quite interesting you can make such statements sitting on your ass at home when others are doing all they can for the movement, no not me, I´m learning like you, but maybe one day I can be of use.

But I know better to critize people with such an enormous task, by the way Chiapas is bigger than some European Countries. Think about it. And their movement has strengthened Oaxaca and Yucatan movements.

By the way there is 32 Mayan languages and many dialects, 12 of which I believe are spoken in Oaxaca.
Adios.

I am doing something to help the natives over here. The commonwealthists here are helping the natives learn spanish and how to stand up for yourself against the government and etc.

Ignorant??
Take it easy sonny boy/girl
I was talking about what the zapatistas deal with the government and the way they seperate the struggle of their part from the fight of all of the mexican working class.
Those are very valid points indeed. I know there is a tendency on the left to admire groups that just "do something" instead of digging into the whole problem.
And if I need to take abuse for not talking a simplistic attitude to this so be it.

Well now you don't know anything about what im doing so don't be so arrogant.
My mexican comrades have been critisising the zapatistas from the start and pointed out that the way they took wouldn't lead to victory. That has been proven pretty much correct.
The zapatistas now accepts a capitalist Mexico.

I found out who marcos really is!
Subcomandante Marcos is nobody, he is a mascot,
a idol, marcos isnt one person. Marcos is all EZLN, he
is EZLN. That man you see in the ski-mask is just
a actor. The ski-masked, big nosed, white, green-eyed man
is not marcos. He is marcos' representitive. If you say
that marcos is an anarchist, communist, or etc, your saying
that the EZLN is an anarchist, communist, or etc. I will
compare marcos to god, some believe god is a white bearded
man in heaven, some believe he is heaven. Some believe
marcos is a green eyed mexican who is in the zapatistas, some
believe he is the zapatista. I believe he is the zapatista.
Like Comandante Esther (supposedly the leader of the zapatistas),
She was just a lie, there was no comandante esther, she was made
up to get people to stop asking who is marcos. Nobody can answer
who is marcos. If they ask the EZLN who is marcos, they simply
say marcos is the zapatistas. This guy behind the mask is playing
the role as marcos. Marcos is 21 years old, the man behind the
mask is probably in his middle ages.
