You're a "real fan"eh? He's your "soulmaster"? Ok... Let me tell you that you didn't sound very convincing, anybody can say "Oh yeah well dude....i'm a real fan of Bob Marley...yeah." How about giving us some reasons on why you're a true fan of the rastafarian and not some big ass stoner who just uses Bob's images as a 'pot' icon.

I used to like Bob's music a lot, but then I got into Roots music which wasn't quite as commercialised. I've written about it many times already ono this board.

Yeah. I think even "Blackheart Man" trumps "Natty Dread" anymore.
and for that matter, most Peter Tosh albums (with the exception of that Rolling Stones bullshit album Bush Doctor)are more solid musically than Bob's.

I used to listen to Bob Marley almost exclusively, but now (mainly b/c of Canikickit), I only listen to one of four albums very rarely.

gotta say i love the bob.

cliche as it is I got real into it one day when i was stonned listening to a record. reggae is so made for marijuanah. He sounds so torn and sad sometimes - yet it is such happy upbeat music. its real inspirational a man who struggled and gave what he had to the people.

Reggae kicks ass!!!

I really like could u be loved so much good music, its great to dance (skank) to. Ziggy has some good songs too.

I've never done more than surface reading on the guy, and although I own a few albums it's not someone I've spent an awful lot of time listening to...

Still, everything I've read on the man is noteworthy, and the sound he creates is legendary... but I'm no skank'er

Yeah fully bob is pretty damn cool!

and please let's not get into the "more commercial" "less commercial" "sellout" shit.....that really is petty!

Bob has been a real inspiration to me, he's a really good balance of spirituality and reverance mixed with good common cause and sense about things.

Fav. songs probably "Could you Be loved", "Get up stand up" and "Jamming".

I personally preferred bob's stuff to peter's, but they were awsome as a duo....just like at catch a fire and the other earlier albums. although admittedly i only have the best of Peter tosh.

It's not petty. It is a damn shame that people think Bob represents Jamaican music, because he does not.

Damn, I love them. Lucky Cani.

I love Marley too. Reggae in general, too.

This is somewhat related to the topic. I know this forum is in music, but instead of just starting another topic in the Literature/Films sections, I think it would just be easier to ask this question here.

Can anybody tell me what is possibly the best biography on Bob Marley? Such as the best (in my opinion and many others) biography on Che Guevara is the one written by Jon Lee Anderson.

I didn't say he did represent jamaican music...that would be just plain stupid!

The reason I point out that his music is more commercial is because a lot of people do feel he represents reggae. As a big fan of reggae, I feel it is my duty to point out that a lot of reggae which was contemporaneous to Bob's sounded quite different, and also that he did compromise his music in order to get the message out there.

he's my soulmaster, because he helped me through a verry hard time...his music and his lyrics helped me to get this shit over me...i don't know where i would be without his music...i think he was such a great guy...i really don't believe in god but my opinion is that there are "higher people" in this world...for me they are people who really did something for the world..these are so called soulmasters for me...
i've read some biographies about him and his live...i really started to feel "connected"to him...i know that he made many mistakes (like che) but also very much good things...but do you know anybody who never made any mistakes in live?
i know that many people say bob marley he was just a fucking weed smoker...but that was his religion...he believed in this religion...without it he may be still on this world but would he really be such a great person?
I've got many reasons for me because i like him, his music, and the way he lived...
i know he helped many other people with his music and with his lyrics...

Actually, it could be argued that his religion killed him. Because of the soccer injury he got (and neglected for a long time), he needed a toe amputated, refused on grounds of religion, the toe got cancerous, the cancer spread, and he died.

I mean, he was still a brilliant musician. I especially like "Iron Lion Zion", "I Know a Place", "Zimbabwe" and "Exodus".

I own quite a lot of Marley's albums, I also own many of almost every style of music there is. One thing I have found is that many are easy to really get into: Metal goths, Reggae stoners, dance scallies. At the end of the day most people have now more claim to a genre of music than anyone else. Good music is inclusive and should not require you to know every last intricate detail of its composition in order for you t appreciate it.

I have tried the whole spiritual guidance by pop stars and the like, but at the end of the day they were people and it is a bit insulting to try and make someone out to be something that they never were, and in some cases never claimed to be. Bob Marley wrote good songs, and after he ded the not so good ones came out. I am not aiming anything at the person who started this thread it is just something I am quite bitter about. I would be so tempted to slap the next stoned 14 year old claiming eternal brotherhood with Marley if I didn't know it was a phase that they will thankfully grow out of.

Rastafarianism isn't neccesarily about "weed smoking," though to some extent it is. A good Rasta smokes a few times a month, only for religious and "enlightenment" purposes. To smoke for personal pleasure is a sin in Rastafarianism, as is drinking.

Bob Marley's alright. I used to listen to him a lot. But, like canikickit, I've gotten more into roots reggae and other kinds of reggae. Less commercialized stuff.

"Burnin and Lootin"
"Johnny was"
"Them Belly Full"
"Concrete Jungle"
"The Sun is Shining"
"Natural Mystic"

I can't get enough of him. I prefer the old gritty stuff he made while still in Jamaica. His live versions of any song is better than the studio version though.

whoa. Hold up, CanIKickit, I know what you mean.
I just saw a commercial for Air Jamaica (?), or one of Jamaica's airlines and it was Marley's "One Love" playing in the background. The announcer said "one love, etc. etc." That, is commercialized. I hate it when they do this, i'm sure it drew some people in.

I like Marley, he was a good man with a good heart, so what should money matter to him.

yeah I like the 'Rebel Music' DVD the best...just because its an accurate depiction of his life and his unfortunate death from melanoma in 1981.

Question, I've heard Bob Marley before and he definitely kicks ass, but I've heard claims (coming from people at my school) that he apparently hated white people.

Any truth to that or are they being ignorant rednecks?

I doubt it, but even if he would it would be an understandable form of hatred, anyways ask for proof first.
