in my place -anantapur-a.p-india nearly 1 farmer commits suicide every weak.

here farmers condition is severe.the farmers depends on underground water and rain water for the seeds they have sown.
there were no rains here past 5-6 years.the farmers every year take debts and sow seeds ... expecting the rain , there are no rains and they feel there is only one way for their survival--the suicide[its their illiteracy-no,no-their self respect].

just recently the changed governament is taking few good steps to stop suicides of farmers.

the organisations and n.g.os also do some activities to stop these suicides.

recentlythe leftist parties have done a great wrk to stop hunger deaths.they[leftist parties] took funds from the leftist supporters and prepare ganji[the mixture of rice soup , jaggary which contains essential protiens, carbohydrates for energy---thats a cheap and good drink]the poor and old have just survived by this ganji.the places[sheds]for this ganji are called ganji kendras[houses of ganji]

this work have been a great effect which motivated many people to start this work in the country.,

I am afraid, comrade, that the situation is similar here in Australia.

Drought has ruined much of the agriculture in the eastern part of the country. Farmers are shooting themselves, just as they are where you live. There has been no proper rain here for nearly a year now.

It's good that leftist groups have been helping the poor farmers and their families. They're doing that here too. :)

Thats areally sad. Some people work so hard and all the food they make gets sent of overseas or to the cities (the Irish potato famine) it happens all through the 'third world'. Drought and pesticides, 'development', dams, urbanization, global warming, pollution, destruction of forests and other factors are causing drought and famine.. like there wasnt enough without those things.

Where I live it is very green but there is still floods and droughts sometimes - not on a massive scale though - and we are small and stable enough to be able to feed anyone who gets hit by a disaster - India is a massive country.

A great book about India and 'development' is:
The Algebra of Infinite Justice - by Arundhati Roy
It talks about the damage caused by gigantic dam projects, the dangers of nuclear weapons, privatization and things threatening mans survival.

I would love to go to India someday. I am vegetarian so I love Indian food. Did you rahul go to the world social forum or the mumbai resistance? What do you think of the new government?

Bloody hell. If things get bad enough in the UK do you think that will happen? that's nuts!

i think is globalization and global warming continue at the current rate things will get like that - for now there is an illusion that things will get better and better.

but populations are increasing and resources are decreasing, plus farming/agriculture techniques are unsustainable - fuel is used extensily - wether to transport goods or in pesticides/fertilizers or productions of materials (to make tractors, spades etc), plus urbanisation and deforestation. the countryside feeds the cities and the cities get bigger doesnt take much to work out it will end in disaster if things dont change.

reading enviromental books and material on globalization is good, because if the governments dont work out out well have to take power and do it ourselves in the future. be prepared...
