I know we always talk shit about the guy...but is it just me or is he the real deal when it comes to Hip Hop? Really, I love the guy!

I don't think he's the real deal. He's "King of New York" only because Biggie got murdered, he retires as Jay Z then signs on to do a record with Dr. Dre as Sean Carter, he uses 100 Biggie lines and says something like "When I use one of Bigs rhymes I'm just reppin' him". No it's becuase your rhymes are like this: "I pack heat like the oven door" and "Every time I hit the ground, I bounce up like roundball".
And because of this:

Hip Hop is nothing but stolen lines just like rock is just a sea of stolen riffs! Seriously who else has rhymes like "I'm flyer than the piece of paper bearin' my name" or "you know the type that wouldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight"?
Who cares whether he calls himself the King of New York. Atmosphere's Slug is an incredible artist and nobody's ever heard of him! The music is more important than the hype and I think the music stands up! Who else in the mainstream scene (or outside of it) has the sort of complex dynamics within songs that Jay-Z does?

If you forget about the hype and all Jay-Z is a decent artist. I can always pop in "Reasonable Doubt" and just chill.

I think for Hip Hop to survive it would have to be more than just stolen lyrics and rhymes. But I'm not toally dumping on Jigga, he ghost wrote like half of Dre's Chronic 2001 and Reasonable Doubt is a great album, but that's about it I think. I mean if I had the money he had I'd be able to sound good over the beats he has.
But as far as punch lines go, I like Lloyd Banks (http://www.d12world.com/board/showthread.php?t=101021), Immortal Technique (http://immortal-technique.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1075), or Big L (http://bigl.irth.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1107).
The Jay Z that I like is on the '7 Minute Freestyle" with Big L, but he doesn't rhyme like that anymore and it's a shame that he does not. But as far as complexity in rhymes Aesop Rock, Canibus, Immortal, or Gangstarr.

Why am I the only person who thinks Immortal Technique sucks? Jesus...who wants to hear long, slow, uninspired, moralistic tales of things that never happened? Mediocre rhymes. No comment beats.

Immortal Technique owns. He's what Jay-Z never will be.

Jay-Z did a song recently with Dead Prez which I find to be superb, called "Hell Yeah." The fact that he comes out of nowhere and namechecks Portland was an added bonus.
I also happen to like "My 1st Song" and several others.

You can't say this isn't genius.
"Flow like the blood of Abraham through the Jews and the Arabs
Broken apart like a woman's heart, abused in a marriage
The brink of holy war bottled up like a miscarriage
Embedded correspondents don't tell the source of the tension
And they refuse to even mention European intervention
Or the massacres in Jenin, the innocent screams
U.S.-manufactured missiles, and M-16s
Weapon contracts and corrupted American dreams"
(From "The 4th Branch")
Really, everyone who has listened to his songs will have a favorite verse or line of his that they'll whip out to naysayers, that just happens to be mine.
I also happen to like: "Immortal Technique will destroy your religion, you stupid ***** - you're faker than blue-eyed crackers nailed to a crucifix." But I've always had a taste for that sort of stuff.

I believe it is track number 12 (http://www.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2C577526F41A76F42A41E6596BCEF564) on their new album.

yeh but the other versions of hell yeah are better and also Jay-Z is really not good, listen to Nas, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Run DMC or whatever but Jay-Z just raps trying to big himself up.
