Was Dr. Seuss socialist/communist /Marxist? This weekend, I came across a Dr. Seuss cartoon titled The lorax It became pretty apparent to me that this cartoon not only favored communist ideals, but portrayed capitalism in its true form. The once-ler or the capitalist, Finds a lush environment where Its inhabitants live peacefully by working together. He then discovers he can make money of its resources and its inhabitants. Just like capitalism, he eats away at this peaceful existence all in the name of money. He then systematically destroys this communist environment, leaving nothing but him, his money, and pollution. At the end, he regrets it all and warns not to spread this ideology around, or it will destroy everything. Amongst the problems facing us today, like the Palestinians battling oppression, this post seems stupid and trivial, but I couldnt stop my self from sharing. I hope this brings some relief or even some laughs to those sadden by what has been unfolding in the middle east.
( I posted this under general politics because I didnt think it would fit anywhere else)

I absolutely love Dr. Seuss. Without him, I might have never learned to read. And I've also been in a few plays based on his books.
I never heard that he was a Marxist, but if you look at his ethnic group and time period it's certainly not out of the question. The Smurfs are confirmed, card-carrying communists so it wouldn't be too bad if they had the Lorax for a friend.
Dr. Seuss is just some trippy shit. There's probably a case to be made that he is a capitalist, as well. I think his writing was intentionally ambiguous so that each reader could draw their own conclusions about the world. And, being a socialist, you naturally drew socialist-ish conclusions. They certainly do make sense.

As far as I know, he was never affiliated with the communists. He was, however, a big liberal and environmentalist.

There is a book out there, I misremember the title, that is filled with Geisel's political cartoons.
The man, if I remember, approved of the Soviet involvment in WWII, and hated Hitler.
Sadly, it would appear from his cartoons that he was also a tad racist against the Japanese. I know that it was common during that time, but still distressing to see in black and white.
I will research his Communist-ness.
