How refreshing it was to hear that Abdelwahed Belkeziz has spoken out at the latest conference of the OIC.
For too long, leaders of the Islamic world have spoken out against terrorism in a way which suggests that terrorism is a freak thing, brewed from hatred and evil. Mr. Belkeziz's words have finally told the world the truth. The Islamic world does nto follow these terrorists and does denounce them and although America is partly to blame, the governments are also int he wrong. He has finally made the point of discarding any religious explanation for any of the problems and links Islam to absolutly nothing in his argument.
He mentioned the fact that the peoples of the Islamic world feel powerless, not just against the economic and hegemonic might of America, but also from their own governments due to the poor standards of everything from education and health to economic development and trade relations.
"The aggregate gross domestic product of all our member states remains lower than that of one single advanced country such as France or Britain." This extract from his speech is one of the few times I've heard Islamic leaders really talk real politics when it comes to explaining, denouncing and solving the problem of extremism. Too often, leaders have spoken so vaguely about it.
Indeed, the only time he brought religion into it was to say that all of this inadequate governing has lead to the tainting of the image of Islam.
He also spoke of a diversification and diminishing of communities throughout the Islamic world, something which is occuring all over the developed world also it seems.
"The powerlessness that the Muslim world is experiencing today and the difficulty of finding solutions to our just causes have been the reason behind the rise of extremism". This is another extract from his speech showing that it seems that the OIC is finally opening it's eyes and not just blaming the rise of extremism on either America or simple human hatred.
Hats off to Mr. Belkeziz.
