I just watched this movie. I thought it was pretty good but brutal, especially the scene where Li'l Ze has SteakandFries to chose which of the Runts to kill. Has anyone else seen this movie?

Yeah its one of my faves, one of the few films I actually bothered to buy and watched a few times. (I also like Spanish so...)

A little disturbing but a great film, that scene is paticularly brutal, get the dvd and there is a documentary about the real life favellas.

maybe it is portugese, I just enjoy that whole accent, kinda of language thingy if you get me.

Thats where the film gets really good by the way!

It is in portuguese. They speak portuguese in brazil, not spanish, which is where the whole thing takes place.

Yes they speak portuguese because the colonists were Potuguese people. It was their only colony, but it was the biggest(and it sill is) in Latin America.
So i really liked the movie too, allthough i dont like gangsta movies. This one also had some other issues in it like personality of characters, ethnical conditions, poverty, govermant, ... It is a pretty cool movie!

City of Angels was such a horrible movie!

On the other hand City of God is probubly my favorite movie ever. I liked how subtle some of the things were. I saw it with my father, and he explained to me how subtle the racism was in the movie. Like when Benny (Bene?) races Tiago and tells Tiago to go buy him some clothes (because he knows in Rio they wouldn't sell stuff to a black guy). Really interesting stuff.

Also, it has my favorite line ever. "You should sniff coke, it's really far out." Haha, it was humorous and extremely depressing to hear a 16 year old talk about sniffing coke.

City of God is an excellent movie. I couldn't bring myself to watch it dubbed though, i think it would take a huge chunk of authenticness out of it. Damn, I didn't know they had a documentary on the dvd about the real guys, I'll have to get my hands on a copy again to see that.

The story was pretty brutal, but fucking amazing, I love how almost every character was intertwined one way or another and what makes that even cooler is it's a true story.

Cidade de Deus was the best damn movie i have ever seen...

It's incredible!

the best thing about it is that instead of having a hand full of fucking superstars it has simple people form the guetto.
All the actors were recruited from the favelas, so they aren't just acting, they are representing the reality...

As someone said "Watching the city of God is a civic duty"

"Dadinho o caralho! Meu nome é Zé Pequeno porra!" hehehehe
