Can anybody tell me what this red rose means? The flower here at Che-Lives looks like a red carnation....

It was the symbol of the PCP (Portugese Communist Party) I think and was also used in the Spanish Civil War as a symbol of Communism. How it came about to be a symbol of the cause I don't know.

Yes, the flower on the Portuguese flag is/was a carnation.
The SovieT explained what it meant in the graphics forum.
it's a carnation
it symbolizes the socialist revolution that occurred in 1974, when the army revolted and made a coup d'etat against the fascist dictatorship..
when the people realised what was appening they started to cheer the soldiers, encourage them and stuff..
so they started putting carnations on the soldiers rifles since the coup d'etat was made without violence...

The red rose is the Social Democratic symbol. Most of those parties use it. I think they thought the red banner was too much, probably because they are reformists.
