"The Problem with Philosophy". Comments posted on a message board by disgruntled undergraduate students.

"...philosophy is mostly a bunch of crap. If someone wants to think about whether or not a world actually exists their whole life, I think they are kind of wasting their time."

"...who would sit around and ponder their exsistence and stuff like that. The use of drugs is one possible explanation for the behavoir of philosophers. "

"Unless doubting everything will revent the destruction of mankind, why waste time with this.

"What made these philosophers even start to ask these questions? Are they not satisfied with what they already know?"

"To me philosophy just seems like a load of nonsense to try and distract people from reality, and then claim it in the name of "deep thought." From my point of view it seems a lot more like "insecurity." Like the philosophers just need to talk to a psychiatrist and get to know and understand themselves better. "

"...philosophizing. To me, that is a waste of a life. However we got here, or whatever it is we are supposed to be doing, I don't think God intended for us to sit around all day wondering whether or not we have heads. "

"Philosophy in it's core is completely useless. It doesn't spawn any concrete theory that is indisputable."

"My real problems with philosophy are the old dead guys that wrote stuff down. Does anyone here really understand what their saying?!?! I can't make it out."

"There has to be at least our conscious somewhere in the world otherwise who are we. And to say we don't even have a consicous, is denying the human story. "

"...it's up to the individual person upon whether or not they wish to sit around and try to answer questions that have no answers. I choose not too. "

"We are all products of philosophy, so don't knock it. "

"But they do try to work their minds into finely tuned organs, they want to know what they can know. Most of you would rather just pretend that you know what you know, but if I asked you, you'd just stare. "

"...studying philosophy gives people this sense of intelligence and of using their brain for real. "

"I'm sure that someone else could give you better, technical reasons why philosophy is important, but all that I know is that its filled me with knowledge and given me a sense of power."

Its just the usual ignorance i encounter all the time (hey that sounds well arrogant!). Philosophy is fulfilling in itself but has also made vital contributions when thinking about important issues such as justice, law, morality and politics.

Why do we study linguistics, history or explore space. Human beings are in this world for such a short amount of time it is fundamental to our nature that we search for understanding of this world and Philosophy attempts this. Anyone who says otherwise is close minded and idiotic.

We are all products of philosophy, so don't knock it.

This was my personal favourite, and yeah the rest pretty much sums up the general attitude any philosophy student is likely to encounter, usually for me in the student bar from some bemused science student.

I think somebody that cant spell philosopher can be counted as somebody who is a philosopher or into philosophy.

I like what John Dewey the creator of the Dewey decimal system said about philosophy: that it was not a specific disipline but the joy of learning and curiousity itself, it was the question: why are we here?

But it must be engaged in practice and dialogue creating praxis with self reflection on one's actions in it or it is meaningless, like a vegetarian that eats meet.
Intention must be engaged, this to me, is the positive aspect of moral disicipline, putting one's philosophy into intention and into practice.

The funniest part about it:

Denying, pondering, assuming, and/or denouncing anything about philosophy would in fact be practicing philosophy itself; no matter how inane those statements were.

So some people within society do not care for expanding thought, though what do they care for? Certain philosophies allow that not all go down the same path in life. I personally find most sports a "waste of time", however that shouldn't be reason for denouncing anothers path in sporting.

Some people just don't think.

The main attraction about Philosophy is to let us think a little deeper and broader simultaneously. The fruitt of philosophizing is the process of it but not the product of it. The product of any concured findings is a bonus. Don't forget that capitalism needs us to produce some absofuckinglutey tangible products / wealth-yielding products or by-products.... of course there will be people blathering about the uselessness of philosophy. Screw the bloody zombies........ ^______^
