check that out... basically the US wants to make it illegal for people to share code or collaborate on anything remotely productive, leaving the software market to corporate giants such as microsoft and novell, as well as enacting a firewall around the US. i believe china has or had something similar to this. looks like the bastards want to control the last potential source of information that they currently CANT... (i.e. the internet. this means us!) don't let it happen. i urge everyone to mail representatives against this bill.. i'll write up a letter a little bit later for people to copy and paste if they wish. dont let this one slip by us. (contributions are also welcome and encouraged)

My roommie's really into computers, and he told me about this. It's awful. I guess it just goes to show that where there is freedom, sharing, creativity and productivity there is always some greasy guy dressed like the Monopoly! man who sees the potential to make some money. (And then he goes out and rents himself a Congressman, of course.)

"In a worst-case interpretation, for instance, the CBDTPA means that only pre-ban versions of the Linux operating system could legally be sold inside U.S. borders."

WTF?!?!?

From what it sounds like, if someone develops a utility for Linux, that would be "illegal," too. And what about things like YaBB? Or ZoneAlarm, which has a free and a paid version? Or RealPlayer?

I understand wanting to protect copyrighted material, but this goes way too far.

it basically says free or collaborated software projects can not be distributed and the internet is US controlled within its borders... (at least this is my interpretation, correct me if i'm wrong). this would mean MAJOR censorship...

as it currently is, thousands of people sit down every day at their computer screen and become enlightened as to the often critical aspects of the U$A. their nationalistic homeland becomes the symbol of a broken and violent history, as they finally realize the truth about the reality in which they live. the internet is nearly the only place this can happen anymore in the US; the only way to at least partially escape the filtered media. if this bill is passed, the government will control it all and this won't happen anymore... the internet will be nothing more than an extended version of CNN.

yeah there was some fucked up car crash here about an hour ago, seems to have cleard up now. we're going to break to a commercial, then weather, then sports. that's all you need to know -- Jello Biafra (quoted from memory, not exact)

this bill also touches fairly high on the scale of economic scams. i'm sure microsoft is sitting back and laughing at all the smaller companies who actually work hard to produce quality products for an affordable price, rather than recycling the same old shit every year and passing it off to all the mindless american capitalist peons as this year's new $400 trend.

we can't let this one slip past us... its just another step to complete control. a rather huge one too. is it just me or are these giant steps being taken without anyone being informed?? in the local paper "Bush breaks ABM treaty" was in a tiny sidebar in the second page, while the front page article was "California's milk not up to dairy standards"... it seems to me that now more than ever the populous is becoming intellectually diluted.

Did anyone notice those articles at the link site talking about Cuba/Castro banning pcs? What's up with that?

here's a link to that article, mentioned by pneuma...

i believe the intent is to create an equilibrium amongst the people in sort of a communist fashion.... i found this quote to support that:

"If we didn't have an embargo, there could be computers for everybody,"

thoughts anyone?

Yea wheres the letter you said we can copy and paste. . .cause I wrote up my own but If i could just print out a whole bunch and mail them out. . .also if we all did it it would show we're all together on the cause. . .(i.e. we should all mail them the same letters and flood every corporat building that has an effect on this bill.

How about emailing it to friends, relatives, ect.

I mean thats who it would mostly affect other users like us. I think the things that those shitheads do is always sneaky they always keep the truth from the citizens. They only tell half of the story or dont even tell the story.

Its that cocaine that Bush has been smoking....

Same thing happened with radio and TV.
I knew this would come about tho, since there was an ominous article in Scientific American predicting this.

I'm surprisede something like this hasn't been on the news. . .or maybe it has and I just watch the wrong news. . .no wait all news is wrong. Hmmm I could go for a long laugh I think I'll go watch CNN mock the hell outta the WTC'S by showing us them falling over and over and over and over. *Sigh* television makes me sick. How can you exploit something like that? All those inncoent lives. Its so so so wrong. I might just cry.

sorry about that latter, i've had some personal turbulence lately to deal with, plus school and what not...

i'm not surprised at all that we havent been informed... the US is using september 11th as a smoke screen, and saying that people should "go on with their lives" in ignorance, because if we inform the public and complicate them with politics then "the terrorists win"...
