Since nobody seems to want to answer the question, I'll reveal the answer. According the the New York State Board of Education and the Regents question creators, the answer is genocide. According to Websters Dictionary genocide is he deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group. Going by this defintion and the one in the American hertiage dictionary the Khmer Rouge's killing of intellectuals wouldn't qualify as genocide, since intellectuals are not a specific political, cultural, or racial group.

The question is indeed somewhat erroneous, but the correct answer would be genocide. Arguably, the 'intellectuals' could be a cultural group in the same way many brand the bourgious.

Yeah, it's genocide! What were the other two choices out of interest?
Genocide is the best answer (From what was given). The latter two scenarios definitely fall under genocide ('genos' meaning race..or tribe).
It's a matter of semantics really.
You could also argue that the Killing of the Armenians wasn't exactly genocide, because the word "genocide" was only coined in the 40s. I still think it is genocide though.
genocide is hate, whatever color or flag or ideas, it still hate, this is an easywayfor idiots to think they can solve their "domestics" problems.

The second two are definetely genocide, they are even recognized as such by the United Nations. The Khmer Rouge killings are not considered to be genocide by the UN. You might be able to call intellectuals a cultural group but it seems like a bit of a stretch.
