I used to belong. They're really all about bourgeois electoral politics now. Bunch of Liberal freformists. Once in a while the magazine puts out some decent articles.

I saw the other thread that you were thinking of SPUSA as well.

I applaud your inquisitiveness and the fact that your trying to learn all you can about the party's before joining. Many do not.

The CP USA is reallya bit to the right of the SPUSA but not much. As an example: The SPUSA has in it's constitution that no member of the party can endorse a candidate of the Democrats or Republicans and normally run there own candidate. Who is usually a clown anyway. The guy they are running this time around, while adhearing to the party line is a staunch anti-communist and is pro-life. Go figure. In contrast the CPUSA in recent history has endorsed Democrats. Including Gore and Kerry. This seams to be the norm with them these days as opposed to the exception.

SPUSA is more autonomous. It has several "locals" that are pretty decent and strongly disagree with the position of the national. Chicago comes to mind. There is a TON of infighting.

However, the SPUSA is a very small and ineffectual party where as the CPUSA is much larger with more organization and resources.

Hope this helps. Is there any specifics you were looking to find out? As far as I'm concerned personally I think they both are sliding way to far to the right of the left. If you know what I mean.

CP USA has been supporting the Democratic Party for years now. There are stuck in this "United Front Against the Far Right" mindset

Sonofrage,
Purley out of curiousity I was wondering what your position on your SP cadidate is and that of your Debsian caucous. (I saw your other post). He really doesn't seem to be your type of guy. I see you didn't defend your party from my post.

Walt Brown was supposed to run on our platform. That is the way things are supposed to work. After getting the presidential nomination (largely as a result of getting votes from people who didn't want to run a candidate in the first place), he publicly expoused many views that directly contradicted our platform. As a result, a movement was started to recall him and replace him with another candidate. Those who supported him kept arguing that Walt was running on the SP platform despite the very obvious and very public evidence to the contrary.

The referrendum to recall Walt Brown unfortunately failed with a vote of 51% voting "NO" and 45% voting "YES" (I voted to recall him and I think he is an embarassment to the party). When it came down to it, the voting results probably had more to do with a power struggle between the revolutionary members of the party and the more moderate elements. There are some in the party who believe that the revolutionary ranks are growing and that the days of being controled by the moderate elements in the party are numbered. That is part of the reason why the Debs Tendency was formed (which for those who did not see the other thread has its website at http://www.debstendency.org )
