Man Dies After Police Use Pepper Spray

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A man who fought with several people and bit a bystander died after sheriff's deputies used pepper spray on him, authorities said.

An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Callers told a dispatcher Friday afternoon that a man was behaving erratically, Broward County sheriff's spokeswoman Liz Calzadilla said.

Deputies and paramedics found Derek T. Kendrick struggling with neighbors who were trying to hold him down, Calzadilla said.

He ``was extremely combative and when deputies got closer to try to restrain him, he turned and bit a bystander,'' Calzadilla said.

The deputies used their spray, and Kendrick was taken to Broward General Medical Center.

Kendrick, 36, died while being treated at the hospital, she said. She would not give specifics about his condition, citing medical privacy laws.

Kendrick's sister, Doreen Kendrick, 37, said the behavior seemed unusual for him.

``I don't think they needed to spray him like that,'' she said. ``If he was on something, the police should have known not to do that to him. It's not safe.''

That's horrible. If it's one thing about police I don't get is what makes them deceide what kind of force to use when 'restraining' someone? Most of the time it's a club to the back of the head or a shot in the back, then again I guess he wasn't reaching for his wallet at the time.

It'll be intresting to see what was the cause of death, it sounds like he had a reaction to the pepper spray, not an uncommon thing.

A Duke University Medical Center report by Dr. Woodhall Stopford released in June concluded that "individuals with pre-existing hypertension, asthma, eye conditions, chest infections or airway reactivity would be more susceptible to adverse effects after being exposed to OC spray [pepper spray] and should be excluded from exposure situations." This report included eye damage, loss of skin sensitivity and respiratory arrest in a list of risks associated with exposure to pepper spray.

I find articals like this to be very foolish. This guy bit a person, when they were trying to restrain him. What were they supposed to do? It's not like they knew he would die from the use of pepper spray.

Maybe if the buggers had used guns...

I can't believe what you guys let your police force get away with in all honesty...

I believe in some places you can even get tazer bolts shot into your ass

Sadly, I believe cases like this and those that will undoubtably follow it are simply part of the inevitable socialist revolution

There's decades more of this comrades <_< :(

Im with Enigma on this, Pepper spray does not sound like excessive force, if he is fighting with several people and then bites someone you dont want him running amock.

nah, u kill him instead, coz he bit someone....

a) first off, this muppet is a product of a decaying system of capitalism, so another reason to overthrow it
b) Surely the police in their brilliant knowleedge can do something for restraining, other than using fuckin pepper spray. Do they not have any more strategies? filthy dumb fuck pigs
