I was called a communist "robot" among other things on a "Books and Literature" forum of a website. Because my interests lie in social issues, social science, and political science, I was called ignorant, flamed by fans of post-modern contemporary fiction, and one immature poster even tried to follow the lead of others by saying "YOUR STUPID. ALL YOU READ IS POLITICS. NO ONE CARES ABOUT STUPID POLITICS". This was just fucked up. Apparently I hold my personal politics quite dear to me and I see no reason why they should be a source of criticism by the so-called "intelligentsia". If no one cared about politics then clearly there would be no such message board as this and nobody would be looked at as "left wing or right wing". So. I wonder if anybody else has ever encountered anything as stupid, ignorant, or as blatantly misguided as this incident.
 <_<

My friends just call me a nerd and a geek because I read books. They don't care what books I read, but reading is something that nerds like to do apparently.

I run into friends of mine that don't care at all about politics. Since politics is about the people, then they obvoiusly don't care for the the people. And if you don't care for others then you are selfish and only care for yourself. It's too bad there aren't more meliorists.

Call them philistines, tell them the Owl of Minerva sent you, Tolstoy is overrated, the greatest writer of the last twenty years is Nathen Zuckermann and then leave.

"tell them the Owl of Minerva sent you"

I really don't think they'd care if Athena sent him or not

but anyway, who cares what they think, besides it's ironic that they called you a robot since you probably read a lot of different opinions and have learned to question what you read better than any of them

yea really. It's just annoying that so many people can be assholes and not see how important politics, theory, etc. are. It's a mob mentality. I'm getting shit from noob's who follow along the regulars. heh. more interesting developments
they've taken the liberty of making up conversations on AIM, painting me a contradictory hypocrite, and they just assumed i'm a psychology student in love with Rage Against the Machine. could they have stereotyped me any worse. (I appreciate rage, but i never told anyone that...)

People who do not see how important politics is, are just plain ignorant. They do not want to talk about it because they do not know anything about it. And they do not know anything about it becaue they don't really care.

Long live, bibliolaters! I am proud to be one. If ever reading would be a crime, I'd be public enemy number one.

I get it all the time too. But I don't think it's good for a person's health to read nothing but political books- there are good, interesting, challenging works in all genres (apart from maybe cowboy books, but I've not read any of them :) )

Its okay to read books. Its a real shame alot of us cant read for ourselves. Alot of people are not prepared to read Karl Marx for example, its some complicated sounding shit! I dont really like to read ficition alot either so dont feel bad. Im in the library and im like, there is so much to know that really exists already that Im not interested in a fictional book right now.
Usually people dont get mad at me for talking politics, cause I dont talk to people about politics. I talk about the struggle, which affects us all, and this is very real. It's beyond words and parties, this is alot of our lives.

We have to have conversations. If you live in America, you notice that people often are not prepared to analyze the struggle, especially when their surrounded in it. Its become such a part of life, that people look at things that are very unjust and "put it in gods hands" or say " no one said life was supposed to be fair"
There are plenty of times to have a conversation, where things come up, and i think a problem is that people squeamish about this, and they avoid it. Marches and rallies are important, but the majority of working people dont participate in these things, however, every one talks. Its a very important thing. The feeling of every day isolation is a big contribution to opression.
If you dont feel that your life is effected by the struggle then be a good listener!
Its amazing how much people really have to say.We have to break the chains of isolation with conversation.
