I was posting on this other forum I usually post on and these people got all over me because I said people should be able to move about freely to other countries. Here are a few of the responses I got...

but on the other hand it's the "native" americans who should be pissed off. all white people in america are immigrants, and they didn't just steal the indian's jobs, but their land and their lives.
also why are the immigrants the problem? why haven't these angry rednecks who always complain about them taking their jobs ever stop to think about the people who are giving them jobs. last time i checked highering illegal immigrants wasn't legal. but yet these factory owners and shop keepers are constantly giving aliens jobs because they work for less. so if these people want to be angry they should be angry at the greedy shop owners. they don't have to "legally shouldn't be" giving these people jobs.

It's a tough debate, but there is a good position on it.

First up, European population is dropping. Don't know about the USA, but the birthrate in Europe is below break-even point so our population is, in effect, dropping. Therefore immigration is a good thing, as they fill up jobs we can't.

Also, the person you were arguing against is right- illegal immigration hurts countries, as bosses have a pool of underpaid labour they can use (the case of the cockle pickers in Morecambe Bay, UK, is a prime example). So the answer to this is to open borders. If bosses can move their capital to where labour costs are lowest, why can't workers move freely too?

What's hard about it? That's an obviously self-refuting circular argument; all those things are consequences of illegality yet they're used to justify people being kept illegal.

It's justifying a policy by means of its own negative consequences. Defenders of capitalism do this a lot.

Yeah, then again the U.$. is responsible for the Jim Crow laws which basically made people of color second class citizens, and then the Chinese Exclusion acts that made it illegal for people from China to immigrate here. Then of course there was Operation Wetback that went on during the Eisenhower administration, which was basically a military campaign to deport immigrant workers from Mexico in the south western part of the country. They often used racial profiling during this time, which made a lot of people angry, so it was a matter of time until they stopped. To this day there are still all these xenophobes that are forming neo-Nazi militias and killing immigrants who try to cross into the country. They say they do this because the immigrants are "invading" and it's part of the "reconquista" by the Mexican government to take back the states that belonged to Mexico before the U.S.-Mexican war. Typical xenophobe racist excuses of course.

The funny thing about the U$'s immigration debate is (according to a TV programe I saw a few months back) that if the southern states were to kick out all of the illegal hispanic immigrants, the entire economy of the South would collapse overnight!
