I was having an argument with my friend who says that comminsm cant work because greed will screw it over. And i replied saying that in a communist society if someone is taking more than their fair share, then its up to society to punish that person. And she wouldnt accept this idea. I dont know why, it makes perfect sense to me. Any of you have any other ideas that would convince her otherwise?

This probably shouldn't be here (unless you wanted rebuttles to the rebuttles that the rightists will try and use).
A few arguements,
1) Ask her about the volunteer phenonamen. She won't be able to give a good rebuttle.
2) Tell her about how society makes people 'greedy'. Give examples of communistic or socialistic settings where people help out. Link in with above.
Basicly 'our' culture tells people to want more, more, more. If we change the culture (which isn't the same across the world, some places have nice cultures), we change this more bit.
4) Ask her if she is so selfish that she wouldn't help out others.
5) Go on about how your not selfish and that most other people aren't.
And finally go and read the various threads (probably in theory) on this topic. Use the 'search' function.

Tell her that greed is a social creation, it has nothing to do with human instinct or survival, greed is to take more than you need so by definition it can't help survival. What she probably meant instead of greed is selfishness, selfishness can help survival in certain situations but in it's self is not human instinct but a product of our environment. The reason selfishness seems so natural is becuase we live in a capitalist society where being selfish is a 'good' quality, it can help us survive, in a communist society this wouldn't be the case.

This very same situation comes up all the time on che-lives. I suggest you do a search and you will find loads of threads with this very same "my friend said...."

She would probably kick his pink ass up and down the St. She obviously has more balls than robob does.

The term pink was created to describe reformists (a mix of red and white). Not communists. The correct term is red!

There is a difference between greed and self interest. Every human being is self interested because otherwise they would end up dead (and even suicide is done out of self interest).
You need a situation where what is good for the collective is also good for the individual. Communism cannot solve this problem.

Before you go anywhere with this you really need to nail down what you mean by "fair share". Do you mean fair as in everyone gets the same regardless of how hard or smart they work or for that matter if they work at all? Or do you mean fair as in everyone is rewarded according to their efforts?
Just what does "fair" mean?
