There are many people who think that college professors are predominantly leftists, but I think its important to be able to tell the difference between a true dissident and a liberal, such as many teachers indeed are. Most teachers I have had tended to be in favour of the American government, including a free-market-can-do-no-wrong libertarian teacher I had for a Mass Communications class.
A big factor in the labeling of teachers as leftist, I think, may be that conservatives often feel, or like to feel, like they are opposing something. Rather than act like they are in power, as they are, they would prefer to pretend that they are facing some sort of leftist majority in their country. And so it is not uncommon for them to make ridiculous comments like
The American media loves Fidel Castro.
Political correctness reduces our freedom.
Colleges turn out leftists, especially political science courses.
From listening to them you would think that colleges were filled with dissidents and they, the conservatives, were just innocent students trying to survive among them. But if my professors represent the leftist community of America, then I would hate to see what the real conservatives are like.
