Since this is bound to induce commentary from the left and right, I'm putting it in OI.

their was many similar posts to this one, even recently

first of all, one must relize the purpose of the war you cant just say you would join. you would have to think the war was necessary before you just go ahead and join.
their is good reasons to join early because you could chose what branch of the military you wanted to go into, me personally since i am assuming you are talking about the US i would go to canada rather then fight in another one of their capitalist blood baths

I don't think hiding in canada would be very practical, they'd know exactly where i was as soon as i went through the airport.

If there was a draft I would leave to some other country and never come back. A country is not truly free if it forces its people to fight in wars for the rich.

refuse to obey orders, prison is much better than forcibly serving in an imperialist army.

I'm not going to fight for some dirty capitalists! All they want is to fuel their evil
capitalist machine.

under certain circumstances i might but for the most part fuck no!

if my country is worth defending and fighting for than sure i'll go and do my best but if i live in the country i live in now fuck no!
Also if it is to protect my family you know im going to be there
but for the most part it is all a bunch of bullshit people who do have money having all us little people fight their war... especialy as a latina i feel that "minorities" should not serve because this country has only fucked them over... the u$ that is... and that is the main way I approach this

If my country was being invaded, chances are i'd grab the first gun and start shooting, but under a draft? nah, i'd go hide somewhere, they can't search everywhere, on the whole, i'm a bit of a pacifist and the only time i'd kill someone was if my close ones were in danger.

i would thank some higher power for not living in the US.

But if i would live in the US i would never fight a war so that people who are just sitting at home and telling the world lies and ordering people to go to war could get their oil.

It's an every humans choice to decide if they fight and for what they fight.

But that's just me

Under a draft I would certainly grasp to my arms in order to shoot those who believe to have the right to enslave me, take my most valuable property: my life. Those who take your life, enslave you in the army are committing a crime against the individual, and every individual should have the right to protect him or herself, if so by means of violence.

a better hypothetical situation would be? If a Communist country invaded your one would you stand and fight them or join the invaders?

There is no draft. This thread is pointless. What if? What would happen? etc... just to try and bring up anger at the evil U.$ for some stupid legislation that doesn't even exist anymore.

Absolutely wrong. If you read the first post, you will see that the person is a patriot who is worried about the "shame" of refusing to kill for the interests of big business.

Either way, anyone who thinks the draft is a good idea isn't a true "patriot".

deathb4dishonor. interesting name.

so then, who dictates what is really honor, you or someone else?

and would you lay your life on the line for something you don't believe in?

what about laying someone else's life on the line for something you don't believe in?

how do you feel about cannon fodder?

The honor of a person is decided only by him/herself

and would you lay your life on the line for something you don't believe in?

Yes if it was my countrys wish

ok well....lets say there was a war, and 'your' country was part of it. I would join, cause sooner or later there would be a draft, if it were a big war. If you join before the draft, they give a little more than basic training. When you get drafted, they basically give you a gun and throw you out to your death.

so you wouldn't flee the country? you'd just join? when did people actually start taking the "if you can't beat 'em join 'em" adage so seriously?

There's the problem. That sounds pretty fascist and trust me when I say that I'm not a pinko che member that goes around calling every non-pinko a fascist. This idea is the same idea that german nationalist socialists believed as well as other so-called "patriots" and it undermines democracy. This idea that the state somehow has the right to tell you what to think and when to fight is anti-freedom.

"Yes if it was my countrys wish"

Say you were born sixty years ago... in a little town called Heidelburg. Your country attacks itself and frames a neighbor. Your country expands with military force. Your country's borders collapse, the Russians are closing in on Berlin, and everyone from 16-60 is drafted to defend. That means you.

They close in on your area, your country's brutal causes of expansion and racism are lost with no hope of a future, and you're being personally attacked. Would you surrender, and give up your country's wish?

Hell no I wouldn't, in fact, I had this discussion with my parents at one stage and if it got to the Vietnam situation, they would finance any move I could make, that would prevent me from going to war.

If I'm a coward for not wanting to die, then so be it. I'd rather be dishonourable then die and kill other people for something I don't believe in.

As canikickit pointed out, that's not the case. Obvisouly there is no draft now but I think there is geninue concern, if the "war on terror" expands there could well be a need for it.

Dismiss them , if you like but there are some interesting articles about it:
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article5146.htm
http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1077906,00.html
http://www.voiceoffreedom.com/draft/draft.html

It's unlikely, according to most reports now but if the war is expanded in anyway, I think it's a definite possibility.
