I was watching SBS world news, and it featured an article done by the BBC on China's booming construction industry.

Following is a comment made by a British Economist, Michael French, living in China.

"What we are seeing here in cities like Beijing and Shanghai is really first world construction industries and standards, with workers being paid at third world rates. This really is a fantastic combination for international manufacturers..."

I felt I had to post this example of bltant and callous capitalist exploitation...

I think Beijing gave up Maoism a long time ago. :(

No worse than any other capitalist exploitation, is it?
China is not the only heavily industrialized nation with third world standards of living.

And what difference does it make whether or not it's industrialized?

I'm not saying it's any "better" or "worse" I just couldn't believe someone could come right out and say that on international TV. although, this type of disregard for humanity is becoming a growing trend...

He said that it was a fantastic combination for international manufacturers.

Not fantastic, but fantastic for international manufacturers.

What he said was completely true. It is fanstastic for international manufacturers.

yeah um.......no shit!

sorry what was he point?

of course it is instantly recognised that yes it is a "fantastic combination for international manufacturers", and that this is indeed true. However my point was that blatant class arrogance and opression could be displayed in this manner.

I think he was intimating that the report was still fairly impartial - it merely asserts that this is a fantastic combination for internation manufacters - which it is.

Whether we agree with or not is the question at hand, so the point is somewhat moot.
