PRESS RELEASE - May 27, 2004

Throw the Liberals Out!
MLPC Fields 22 Candidates in Quebec

Ending the suspense but not the hesitation, Paul Martin called the federal election on May 23. What is the implication for Quebec?

This non-elected Prime Minister presents himself as the leader of the "Martin Team" in order to distance himself from his own party. Everyone knows why: the Liberal Party of Canada brought shame on itself with the sponsorship scandal whose intended result was to bring the Liberal Party of Quebec to power. The corruption had a political goal: to block the striving of the people of Quebec to take control of their lives and provide themselves with a nation-building project. The sponsorship scandal demands an answer in this election. The answer is to refuse to sponsor the Martin Team.

The Quebec Liberal government came to power thanks to a record level of abstentions. It rules through gag orders and by decree. It attacks the right of the workers, women and youth to organize and enforces monopoly right. This "re-engineering" of the state places all the material, natural and human resources of the nation at the disposal of the monopolies and the international financial oligarchy. Still, the Martin Team says that Quebeckers are better off with the Liberals than in a "perpetual opposition." This is not true. An opposition from Quebec, when combined with the opposition of the working class and people from the rest of the country, will one day become the government. This election is an opportunity to bring this about. Defeating the Liberals in Quebec will puncture the arrogance of those who declare that no matter what the people say, they will nevertheless continue on the anti-social, anti-labour and anti-national path. As 100,000 people declared in the streets of Montreal on May 1, the people never voted for that.

In this regard, the federal Liberals call the Quebec people's desire to affirm their sovereignty "taking Quebec out of Canada." On this basis, they claim they have been "engaged in a war to save Canada." This too demands an answer. Such assertions are merely to cover up that submission and annexation of Quebec and Canada to the U.S. is part of the "mandate" the Martin Team seeks to legitimate with this election. The real election issue is the Martin Team's refusal to "take Canada out of the U.S."

Whether federally or provincially, the Liberals' project to restructure the state is anti-social, anti-labour and anti-national. The mandate of the popular vote in Quebec in this election is to throw the Liberals out!

Who Decides? We Decide!
Annexation No! Sovereignty Yes!
Throw the Liberals Out!

I must admit that I know nothing of the politics of the "Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada".

Except, of course, that they have clearly bought into the myth of bourgeois "democracy" and electoral "politics".

In other words, they are reformists.
