PRESS RELEASE - May 26, 2004

All Out to Build the Alternative!
Statement of the Marxist-Leninist Party Youth Candidates

In the federal election, incoherence and mystery making are deliberately being used to keep the Canadian people from establishing any alternative to the status quo. Paul Martin is trying to characterize the election in such a way that Canadians have no choice but to vote for the Liberals. They present the NDP as big spenders who can't be realistic. The Conservatives are presented as tax cutters who want to make Canada like the United States. Martin characterizes the Liberals as being realistic, presenting a balanced approach and sticking to the values on which he asserts Canada is based. This assertion is made without any discussion on what these so-called values are and whether they serve the interests of the Canadian people. Both the NDP and the Conservatives answered the election announcement with similar confusion making, trying to cast aside the labels thrown at them by Martin.

The election announcement and the subsequent responses from the NDP and Conservatives represent a deliberate attack on the Canadian youth and an attempt to bombard our consciousness so as to block us from thinking for ourselves based on our own experiences and interests. Issues are used to divide the polity without ever discussing the essence of the problems. Instead of a space being created so that the real problems the people face can be discussed and then together solutions can be found, elections become an opportunity to create a mythical world in which the causes of problems are a mystery and the only options are to choose between "left," "right" or "centre," or to abstain.

In election after election, the Liberals have claimed to be the party of the "stable centre," raising the spectre of "two extremes." However, once in power, the Liberals have implemented the most extreme policies of the anti-social offensive and the selling out of the nation to the U.S. in the name of sovereignty. Furthermore, their talk about "two extremes" is an attempt to marginalize the struggle of the people for their rights and those who are putting forward a nation-building project.

The Marxist-Leninist Party Youth are participating in this election on the basis of continuing our work to develop a real alternative for the Canadian youth. Never has the need for an alternative been more clear. The Marxist-Leninist Party Youth are all organizers in their own right. We are active 24/7 in working to unite the Canadian people, regardless of their ideology, so that the real problems we all face can be discussed and solved. We are part and parcel of the youth and student movement across the country which is in the forefront of the struggle to defend the rights of all and to uphold the right of all nations, big or small, to determine their own affairs. The Marxist-Leninist Party Youth are taking up the challenge to build the kind of political party in Canada which will empower all Canadians and release their initiative to take up their own nation-building project. Far from allowing the youth to be divided on the basis of political affiliation in this election, the Marxist-Leninist Party Youth call on all youth to join the work to build the kind of party they require to bring about the democratic renewal of the political process and ensure that it is the Canadian people who decide all the affairs of the nation.

Who Decides? We Decide!
Annexation No! Sovereignty Yes!
VOTE MARXIST-LENINIST!
