The clash had some good songs, it has to be said, but I can think of better bands. RHCP, are OK, some good songs... some piss poor songs as well though.
In terms of rock music, then probably a classic rock band, such as Pink Floyd, Deap Purple, etc.
In terms of modern music, IE of the past few years, Tool and APC, for the prog rock scene.
In terms of Pop music, probably Queen, who have quite an impressive array of classic songs.
Rap music, and to all that other related stuff, I have no opinion, its all equally dire.
For the ultimate blend of singing, instruments, lyrics, etc. then your probably looking at a band like the MSP, who have a great range of cult songs, to full blown pop classics.
In terms of sheer popularity, and making whole new genre's of music, then your looking at the beatles, who among a few others can claim responcibility for the modern sound of music.
In all I think that your looking at the Beatles, what other band has been so influencial, popular, and had in many cases suich damn good songs.
Dont get me wrong, I do prefer some other bands, but for "best band ever", the beatles win without a shadow of a doubt.

In no order
Wolfsheim
Pink Floyd

The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix
it's a tie
close behind is Led Zeppelin
then Pink Floyd, Queen, Frank Zappa, the Who, Eric Clapton, BB King, Albert Collins, Albert King, Deep Purple, King Crimson, the Mars Volta, the Moody Blues, Jeferson Airplane, David Bowie, the Doors, Yes, and the Stones. In no particular order, with some clearly better than others, but all deserving a mention.

Where is Cream?
Anyway, I'd definately say, no question, the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Second would be the Band of Gypsies
and Third would be a Cream/The Chambers Brothers tie

I mentioned Clapton.
But yeah, Cream was better than any of Clap's solo stuff.
And I'm actually thinking lately that I like the Band of Gypsies more than the Experience. Funkier stuff, dig? And I like the members better as well, especally Billy Cox.

The Beatles hands down, though you have to give the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Bob Dylan an honourable mention. :D
And by the way RedZeppelin, the later Jimi Hendrix Experience also featured Billy Cox. Apparently the drummer for the Band of Gypsies, (Buddy Miles, was it not?) signed on for the single record as a favour to Jimi, who needed money.

I love how people just throw their favorites out there as best band ever. Deep Purple ? The Moody fucking Blues ? Are you kidding ? I mean, not to disrespect those bands, but best ever they aren't. And Victor, were you serious when you included the Mars Volta ?
Like Enigma said, if you are going to go for sheer popularity and amount of hit songs, the Beatles win hands down. Even though I don't even really like them, I understand that they are what a "band" should be. However, I think there are hundreds of far more important and creative bands than the Beatles.
It'd be pretty hard to say what the best band is. How are we judging ? Hit songs ? Popularity ? Amount of media coverage ? Best musical ability ? How interesting their lives were ? How much of a bulge do they show onstage (Robert Plant wins that one by the way) ?
I don't know. My personal choice would be the Clash. They helped invent punk, and single handedly saved punk by breathing new life into it, but they were also so much more than a punk band. I don't know, the Clash was just really important to me, and millions of other people.
But I think, on a sort of superficial level, the Beatles would win. I mean, they don't fit my image of what a genuinely great band is, but they had alot of fans and were the biggest band ever.

Deep Purple and the Moody Blues I genuinely think are among the best bands ever.
Damn, I forgot Bob Dylan and the Velvet Underground
And yeah, I love the Mars Volta. Why? I don't know if they belong on there yet, but their first album just kicks a lot of ass, I tell ya.
And I know Deep Purple has changed alot, and they're even still aroud, I believe. They were good in the late 60s, and early to mid 70s. In the mid 80s they released some okay stuff, but it reeked a little bit of crappy 80s pop rock, and it wasn't very good anyway.
And I'm going by how much I like a band. That's normally based on songwriting ability and musical talent. Unfortunaltely I'm only deeply familiar with some of the more 'pop' groups, and I know that many, likely most, great musicians are not in the 'pop' scene, and I'm yet to discover them. I've only been really listening to music for about 3 years.

tonight I was listening to puddle of mud
it drives me fucking insane
IM CRAZY!
like when it goes "I'm gonna dance...with the devil - YEAH!"
I go berzerk and like I imagine pulling out a couple of semi auto handguns like in last man standing and blazing a billion bullet holes, blasting belzebub to bits! BLAM! and then anotha one - BLAM!
my favourite bands are, like, NIN and pumpkins and pixies. and portishead and OLP and janes. LOVE many songs like All I want is you and Love You Madly. And so on.

Like, Urban Rubble said, what criteria are we looking at?
My personal favourite, if you want to know, is impossible to choose, because for one it changes from moment to moment as my mood and thoughts change, and two, I don't know enough bands to make an educated decision.
Expanding from just bands, I truly believe Ani Difranco belongs in the hall of fame. Maybe I'm biased because I'm listening to one of her albums right now, but even though she may not get full marks for technical skill she is a brilliant song-writer, very expressive, not scared of trying new things, prepared to go it alone, and she's written a hell of a lot of songs.
But as far as a "proper" band is concerned, that's a really hard one, because I don't tend to know much about a band in itself, I just buy the albums. however I'm very tempted to say Minor threat, because they gave a lot of kids, a bit like me, a direction and wrote some cracking songs.

Personally my favorite is RATM cause Tom Morrello is awesome, i know i know, stereotypical commie, but anyways, in terms of music creativity, I'd say Zeppelin were the best because they paved the way for rock music.

Don't deny it CP. They were very innovative and did many things that hugely influenced later rock musicians.
I'd agree that they weren't the most innovative. That's certain. But they were innovative.
Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Velvet Underground, and the Stones were all more influential and innovavtive as far as mainstream rock music goes. In fact, the VU was very influential to punk as well, no?

It think he was saying "huh" to the fact that this guy said "paved the way for rock music". I mean, yeah, they were influential, but to say they paved the way for rock music is insanity. Rock was invented decades before Zeppelin.

Why is it that you only talk about bands pre 1980 ? I mean, if we're talking about influential music, there is alot of things that happened after the "golden age". I mean, even though you hate them, can you really say that Nirvana wasn't one of the most inluential bands of all time ?

I think they were more infulential in terms of attitude and the punk ideology than in actual music.

Other than grunge, I haven't heard much post-70s rock that was very fresh. Other than maybe some punk and heavy metal. Both of those, even, also began in the 70s. Not even this new wave of hardcore is very innovative. I haven't heard much hardcore, so maybe that's why it all sounds similar to me, but all these cool hardcore groups lately don't sound very different from the hardcore from the late 70s to early 80s.
Yeah, Nirvana did influence lots of bands, I can certainly admit to that.

I think he meant that Zepp paved the way for future rock artists by innovating such a fresh style of rock that turned out o influence countless groups later on.

With King Crimson a close third, and Frank Zappa bringing up the rear of the leading pack :D
Well said before robob8706, ratm were fucking awesome. de la Rochas lyrics were brilliant, and morello is a genius on the guitar.
However, you can't say that they were the best band ever, they were one of them, but almost all of the bands mentioned here could be considered the best.
I do have to admit that anyone who says that the Clash weren't one of the best bands ever needs to be shot!

Lost prophets are not dire, they have some fine tunes, but some damn auful ones, IE We are Godzilla - You are Japan, I have no idea what came over them when they made that song! It had such a great opening Riff they then proceeded to ruin the song.

One of the best in socialist principals was World Entertainment Wars, on an amusing note the lead singer is now one of the most famous horoscope writers, although they are very strange horoscopes filled with hard core advice and a bit of politics.
I remember the police arriving at secret shows.
FEAR and The CLash also share this distinction.
Although Pink Floyd had a deeper affect due to their use of sentimentality and showmanship.
Really loved the CROMAGS too.
